I've moved back from being overseas to Tampa, Florida.

I figured being closer to John Stone will magically give me his fitness ethic. J/K. :p

I did however start back on my fitness quest. I'm documenting it at http://365fitness.blogspot.com/ I am devoting 6 months to fat loss and 6 months to muscle gain. I'm currently on day 5.

I'm not lifting weights during the cut, as I've had much better results personally in the past with just doing cardio & dieting. I know that is a big no-no in general, but I'm just going off of my own experience. I expect the bulk to be much easier for me than the cut.

Anyway, I didn't realize that John is in Orlando until I just saw a post of his. Maybe I'll see him at Disney World sometime. :)

Thanks, we sound a lot alike from reading the first post of your journal.

How do you measure results? Straight weight loss when you step on the scale? Then sure, if you're after the quickest amount of weight loss possible and willing to count unnecessary pounds of lean mass lost as a positive contribution to your results, then maybe cardio and dieting alone is the way to go.

Subject A loses 10 lbs in 2 months. 5 lbs fat, 5 lbs lean mass.

Subject B loses 8 lbs in 2 months. 6 lbs fat, 2 lbs lean mass.

Who had better results?

The lower your BF% becomes, the more likely it becomes to start losing lean mass that you don't have to. If you want to get things started with your cardio and diet approach, that's up to you I guess, but I definitely wouldn't go the full 6 months with this system. Towards the end, your body recomposition results aren't likely to be pretty regardless of what the scale reads.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

so when you say you are basing your cardio only routine on experience, are you implying that you have previously tried lifting weights and it didn't help with fat loss?

If you just flat out don't dig lifting weights and will not be persuaded otherwise, no problems.:) I have a cardio fetish as well. :) I don't enjoy my lifting sessions very much, but I do it anyway. Just to add another voice to the parade, I promise you that lifting heavy stuff will help you lose fat. Unless you have injuries you haven't told us about, not lifting weights in the hopes of optimizing fat loss is utterly retarded. But if cardio is the only thing that will get you moving, it's not so retarded.:)

Good luck with your goals man.

I understand that you think its retarded, but I'm just going off of what has worked for me in the past. I think sometimes its a mistake to look at what works for other people as a strict guideline for ourselves.

For the record, I hate cardio. I wouldn't say I love lifting weights, but it is at least enjoyable sometimes. I can add muscle pretty well. I'm looking forward to the bulking part of my year. Its the fat loss that is hard for me.

In the distant past, I have twice lost a lot of fat through cardio and diet, and I dare say that I didn't lose much muscle at all. I don't have any number to back that up, I'm just going off of appearance. I have also done the weight lifting route and the scale wouldn't move for 3 months. I'm just a weird person, I guess. :)

Today was weigh-day and I lost 4 lbs this past week.
