View Full Version : Protein powder and airports
NotNamedDan October 4th, 2007, 08:43 PM In two days I'll be heading to Oklahoma for a week with my family. I will be bringing a hefty dose of Nitrean, and it occurs to me that I have no idea how to pack it or bring it through security in such a way that I'll not look like I am taking a trip back from Colombia.
I am looking for direct, recent experience here. Anyone flown lately and had protein powder in ziploc bags in their luggage? Any practical, already-used ideas for bringing the stuff through? It's too expensive to risk losing, and I'd rather not explain to my grandmother that I was late because a large man was probing my nether regions for dope.
endo October 4th, 2007, 08:52 PM Just put a tub of it in with your carry-on and you'll be fine... otherwise you can check it in. I've done it both ways, haven't had a problem.
However I've always brought it with me in the original tub... bringing a powdery substance in a ziploc bag may look a bit sketch though.
NotNamedDan October 4th, 2007, 09:33 PM That's what I mean. I don't have an original tub, except the 5ish pound tub it came in. I have to transfer it to something else, taht giant beast won't fit in my luggage. I am looking for the Path of Least Sketchiness.

I fly out next Wednesday and was wondering the same thing. I still have a few small empty jugs I am going to transfer it into.
How about you go buy a cheap powder (in a small container) from the supermarket or GNC and put the good stuff (Nitrean) into that?
Not the most cost effective, but atleast you will have a container that 'says' protein powder. In this day and age of hyper-sensitive airport security, I would be less worried about looking like I was coming back in from Miami with blow than I was about looking like I was carrying a kilo of Anthrax.
Good luck!
Nate
MannishBoy October 4th, 2007, 10:06 PM I always put it in my checked bags, and don't take a big labeled tub. Generally will use a smaller one that's still secure.
I'm sure it's fine even carry on, though. It's not like coke smells like vanilla.
chris mason October 4th, 2007, 10:08 PM a) Thanks for using Nitrean!
b) You can get a 2.2 lbs jug of Nitrean which would fit much more easily into your luggage.
c) Do what I have done, just put some in a plastic bag. If they ask tell them what it is.

How about putting it one of the small (about six inches high) Gatorade tubs and checking it? I only say check because I have been through the same security checkpoint eight times in eight weeks to the same place and had to turn on my laptop each time. Kind of sketched me out on the $12/hr TSA agents. "Red Team, GO!" I don't need that drama!
NotNamedDan October 4th, 2007, 10:11 PM I have old Sun-Maid Raisins containers, I am thinking of filling one up and taping the hell out of it to keep it from leaking. It'll look weird on x-ray, but I don't think it'll be a huge deal.
Mannishboy, how do you explain Vanilla Coke, then, huh?
NotNamedDan October 4th, 2007, 10:15 PM I am leaning toward checking it. I don't think it'll raise an eyebrow that way, but in the security line it'll be a question, and any question there is a bad question. Bad enough I have to take out my laptop, have them oggle my camera, and let me tell you, the array of guns and knives on my belt? Always a curious glance or two.
And Chris, I'm happy to be using Nitrean - I love the stuff. You ship fast, but I doubt you'll get it to Boston before tomorrow is over :tu: This is a decidedly last minute question.
I think I'll just put it in [something] and throw it in my luggage and hope for the best. If they blow up my luggage, well, AtLarge will be getting my money a little sooner this next time.
JoeSchmo October 4th, 2007, 10:18 PM I've done this several times without incident. I've put protein powder in ziploc bags, thrown them into a suitcase, put them through the airport scanner and carried them on. I've never had any trouble with it.
NotNamedDan October 4th, 2007, 10:25 PM Alright, I'll give ziplocs in my carry-on a go. I didn't want to check it in case they lose my luggage. I don't need clean underwear, but I need my Nitrean.
I think there's an AtLarge Nutrition t-shirt idea in there with Chris's name all over it.
sodomojo October 4th, 2007, 11:06 PM ZIp Lock bags here too. Usually 5 or so in my laptop carry on, then my checked luggage I put the rest depending on how long I'm staying. Never one problem.

Wow you guys have guts with the ziploc bags. That isn't something I want to deal with, even if it is 'just' protein powder.
I am the guy that ALWAYS get selected for the 'random' (yea right) security screens. I don't need to spend an hour with some TSA dimwit explaining that it REALLY is just protein while my plane taxis away.

If they saw it, tell them to smell it. It smells like cake batter. They will believe it is not drugs.

Lol, that might be a bit much to put on a shirt....

Like I said, I'm more worried about them thinking it was Anthrax. I don't think TSA will be willing to take a sniff of that...
We shall see how this goes.

NotNamedDan October 5th, 2007, 11:21 AM I fly tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it goes for me at Logan Airport.

I'll keep my eye on Fark.com - "Intrepid TSA Agents Thwart Protein Plot"
guava October 5th, 2007, 12:58 PM Don't tape it up in a container of any kind. Whatever you bring, you want to be able to open it for inspection. If you're carrying it along with you, it's more typical that rather than the agent taking a sniff, they will probably ask you to smell it or taste it. If it's going by checked luggage, I'm pretty sure they probably have dogs who will check it over; it's rare that they would open it up and manually inspect it. I don't think there's any advantage of disguising your stash by putting it in a "real" protein powder container, because anyone could disguise any substance that way.
droopy172 October 5th, 2007, 01:10 PM I suggest some kind of tupperware with a twist off lid or like a water bottle of some sort since some fit like 32oz - 64oz and are pretty thin with the mouth large enough to fit a scooper.
nmead October 6th, 2007, 02:31 AM I fly tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it goes for me at Logan Airport.
I think Logan and Bradley were the worst airports (as far as overzealous TSA goes) post 9/11.
I'm interested to hear how this goes....

NotNamedDan October 10th, 2007, 12:45 AM I'm not in jail, but I had to wait for a coworker to ship me a power supply for my laptop, as I forgot mine
Anyway, I used some Rubbermaid containers and threw the powder into my checked luggage with nary a hiccup. So that strategy worked fine, at least.

monkeyshines October 10th, 2007, 11:01 PM I've had no problems whatsoever with plain ol' ziplock bags in my carryon luggage. This includes international flights as well. I think you are overthinking this. :)
nmead October 14th, 2007, 01:29 AM Well I had no problems with my protein in an old Metabolic Drive container. I know TSA hit my luggage due to the stickers and card, but I didn't get paged to come deal with it either.

I agree. out of the millions of people who fly daily your not the first person to bring protein powder on a plane, so I'm sure its nothing new to them.
