is a guy snatching a barbell? Is there actually a hotel anywhere that has a nice platform and bumper plates in their fitness center?

In case anyone knows, is there a hotel chain that has good weight facilities in their fitness rooms? I'm going through booking a trip. I can do pretty well for whipping up a workout with limited facilities, but why not find a good place to start with? It's not that easy to tell from the descriptions on the internet.

Here is one unusually complete description:

Q: What type of fitness equipment is available?
A: Precor C956i Treadmill (8)
Precor 576i Dual Action Total Body Cross Trainer (2)
Precor 546i Lower Body Cross Trainer (3)
Precor C846i Recumbent Bike (2)
Precor C846i Upright Bike (2)
Paramount Seated Chest Press (1)
Paramount Seated Row 250 Lbs (1)
Paramount Lat Pull-down 250 Lbs (1)
Paramount Leg Press 310 Lbs (1)
Paramount Shoulder Press 250 Lbs (1)
Paramount Abdominal 130 Lbs (1)
Swiss Ball (2)
Free Weights with Rack
Stretch Mats (3)
Flat/Incline/Decline work Bench (1)
Flat Screen TVs (6)
Wireless Transmittors for TV sound

So is that "Free Weights with Rack" a rack of dumbells? Or an actual rack?

I've seen that actually be a rack. For instance, the Marriott Marquis Atlanta used to list that and actually had a decent rack with olympic plates. Everytime I've been there recently they've been remodeling, though, so hopefully the new place will have the same.

Yeah the Peabody Hotel in Memphis had a real rack with Olympic bar and plates. They didn't have much else which is why I started the endurance deadlifting kick there.

I have to go to Chicago - last time I was there I was at a place with a Smith, and a bench station, and some plates. Dunno about enough plates to deadlift though.

Single legged :)

Or scare people and do cleans and stuff.

I did my complexes stuff in the downtown Hyatt Altanta with DBs a couple of times. Got some strange looks from the people on the cardio stuff. Going through 6 exercises without stopping then jumping immediately up on the pullup bars wasn't the norm.

If you are in Chicago, need to go to Quads Gym (www.quadsgym.com).

I always try to find gyms in town. Been surprised at a few hotels, but more commonly disappointed/disgusted.

I've never done the out of town gym thing. Do you just buy a 1 day pass? How much is that on average?

If I'm traveling for work, I rarely have enough time to leave to go somewhere since I'm often pretty much obligated to have dinner out with coworkers or business contacts. Fortunately, it's not as frequent as it once was.

I've even been known to put my Ironmaster DBs in the trunk and workout in the room when I've known it was going to be a cardio-only hotel.

Depends on how long you'll be there. If I'm going to be in town for a week or two, I'll ask. If you hit the early morning, you'd be surprised how many times the kid working the desk doesn't know what to do, or doesn't care, and will let you work out for free. Smaller gyms you need to call first, mainly for their hours, but again you'd be surprised that you might get offered a free workout. I usually expect $5 - $10 a visit, and if the kid doesn't know how much it is, I give him a $5 and he can pocket it or give it to the gym. If you're going to be in town for 2 weeks, give the kid a $20, and he will remember you.

Yeah I did Bulgarians with dumbells at this resort on the Connecticut shore and it turns out most of the people there were regular timeshares doing cardio. It sort of melted their heads to see a guy using the dumbells, let alone an exercise they had not seen before.

Well that is about 4 miles from my meeting, so I should be able to get a hotel really close. Plus they have a one day pass for $11.

Now if I go by the schedule we are doing at the moment, then the day before my meeting is uppers. Depending on when my flight gets in, I should be able to do uppers the day I get in and legs the day after in the morning.

This could be cool.

I am on the road 3-4 days per week and many hotels will have an arrangement with a local gym for free workouts. They gyms vary from the YMCA to the local athletic club, just ask as you are making the reservation. As corny as it sounds I actually track the gyms that I stay via Google maps "LINK (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=109363294234548926740.00000112737b11bb86d6c&z=5&om=1)"
