View Full Version : Oatmeal, how to prepare it?
wisedude September 23rd, 2007, 05:45 PM In john's fitness log he says oatmeal (raw). Does he actually eat it with no preparation? It doesn't really have ANY flavor that way, kind of just like eating paper... Is it fine to use 1 part oatmeal to two parts water and microwave it with a little salt and sugar?
dano September 23rd, 2007, 05:53 PM I throw a cup of raw oats in a blender with protein and whatever else I want and have at it.
It's fine any way you can knock it down.

That's my favorite way too. :tucool:
Second favorite is steel cut oats, raw.
Other than that, just add oats to a bowl, add water, put bowl in microwave for ~1 minute, stir, put back in microwave for about another minute.
Then add whatever you need: nothing, Splenda, Splenda's brown sugar stuff, fruit, raisins, almonds, honey, salt, milk, etc. etc. etc.
wisedude September 23rd, 2007, 10:40 PM can you elaborate on the oats and protein? You a cup of oats and a cup of vanilla protein powder blended would taste good? Also is it then something you drink, or eat

Here is my preworkout shake, which I have about 30-45 minutes before leaving for the gym. To me yes, this tastes good. So good it's one of my favorite meals of the day.
2 Scoops Protein Powder
3/4 Cup Old-Fashioned Oats
Water
Add oats to a coffee bean grinder. Grind up very, very fine, so it's almost like "oatmeal powder." Add water to shaker bottle (I just use the cheapo ones from bodybuilding.com or dpsnutrition.net). Add oats to shaker bottle. Add protein to shaker bottle. Add lid to the top of the shaker. Shake. Drink.
:)
Blending it all in a blender will work too, if your blender is good enough to blend the oats very fine.
Some people also just mix it all in a bowl and eat it with a spoon.

This is what I do occasionally and make oatmeal pancakes.

I keep meaning to try my protein pancakes with oatmeal in them. Usually I just use Beverly Ultra Size and some eggs, then add a little Splenda and Smart Balance to the top. I've heard of adding oatmeal to them but have not tried it yet.
How do you make yours, if you don't mind me asking?
MannishBoy September 24th, 2007, 02:08 PM I've made some oatmeal pancakes the last couple of weekends. Off the top of my head this is what I threw in:
60 g rolled oats
30 g vanilla Nitrean
1 egg or 2 whites
1 tsp baking powder
1.5 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
pinch of salt
splash of vanilla
1/4 granny smith apple chopped fine (smashed banana may actually work better, the apple doesn't get cooked enough...or microwave the apple a bit before putting it in...)
enough liquid to make the batter "right" in consistency. I've used a combo of milk and sugar free zero calorie caramel flavored syrup (like you'd use in coffee) Water also works and I've done that.
If you don't use the syrup, probably some sweetener to taste
They turned out pretty good, with the exception of the apples being a bit more crunchy than I would have liked. You could easily up the protein if you wanted, too. I ate them with "light" whipped cream on top. Butter or or smart balance would work, too.
This was all just spur of the moment with no official recipe to work from. So there may be a better tested recipe, but IMO, they were excellent :eat: If you want them more smooth, grind the oats as you mention, but to me it wasn't necessary.
1FastGTX September 24th, 2007, 02:17 PM Thanks MB!
Here are a few other recipes from Beverly's website, if interested. I imagine you can use other powders but I'm not positive.
Peanut Butter - Mocha Pudding: 2 scoops of
your favorite flavor Ultra Size, 1 tsp Natural Peanut
Butter, approximately 1/4 cup of fresh hot coffee, 2
TBS Cool Whip. Mix first three ingredients together in a
small bowl, or to make it more fun, use a coffee cup. You
will need to adjust the amount of coffee depending on
the consistency you desire. Top with Cool Whip as you
eat. WOW!
Julie’s Ultra Size Cake: So simple…Julie eats this
so much that we had to name it after her. Be sure not to
overcook it though, or it gets too hard. 2 scoops Ultra Size
- a little bit of water or coffee (start with one-eighth cup) -
2 TBSP Cool Whip. Mix Ultra Size with water or coffee in
a small microwaveable bowl until the powder is moist and
makes a very thick batter. Microwave for about 40 seconds
until the ‘cake’ rises. Top with Cool Whip as you eat.
Ultra Size Crepes: Mix in a blender 3 scoops
Ultra Size, 1-2 whole eggs, 5 egg whites, (1 TBSP cream
optional), 8 oz water (vary water to the consistency
you want). Preheat in a non-stick skillet to medium
heat. Pour the mixture into your skillet and cook as you
would thin pancakes - one crepe at a time. Serve as is, or
with “no-sugar” preserves on “no-sugar” syrup. Makes
4-6 crepes. (Approximately 75 grams protein, 15 grams
carbohydrate, 15 grams fat) Note: You can refrigerate
unused portion or store in a cooler and eat as a snack
anytime.
Peanut Butter Supreme Shake: Mix in a blender
2-3 scoops Ultra Size Chocolate - 4 ice cubes - 1 TBS
heavy whipping cream - 1 TBSP peanut butter and 12-16
oz water. Mix and enjoy!
Robert2006 September 24th, 2007, 02:37 PM I'll mix peanut, oatmeal and eggs. Then bake them into "cookies" If I remember I add raisins.
Fairly bland because of the lack of sugar unless you add LOTS of raisins.
I cook my oatmeal with fruit. Still bland with no sugar. But it's hot so I don't really notice.
MannishBoy September 24th, 2007, 03:26 PM Another thing I thought of that might work is to modify the Flax muffin recipe I put in this (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=38383) thread.
Instead of the 1/4 cup (4 TBS) ground flax, try it with ground oats. Either microwave as described for a muffin, or add more water (or milk, etc) as mentioned above to take it to pancake batter consistency. Obviously if you want more oats and protein, make a bigger batch. So you could make 3 muffins or pancakes with triple the ingredients. I'm pretty sure it would work because it isn't that different than my experiment I described above.
And you can definetly use PB in the mix, too. I've done that on the muffins.

How do you make yours, if you don't mind me asking?
1 cup fat free milk (or water)*
3/4 cup oatmeal (uncooked, quick or regular oats)
3/4 cup oatmeal flour (easy to make: just blend uncooked oatmeal in a blender!)
1 tsp baking powder (optional)
1/4 tsp salt (optional)
4 large whites
1/2 tsp cinnamon, ground
Try these modifications:
Blueberry pancakes: Add ¼ c blueberries (fresh or thawed) to recipe and omit cinnamon
Oat-Nut pancakes: Add 1 ½ tbsp diced pecans, walnuts, or almonds to recipe.
Whole Grain pancakes: Replace quick oats with hot multigrain cereal. Prepare as directed.
High protein pancakes: Add 1-2 scoops vanilla protein to batter, increase water.
Directions:
Heat milk (or water) until hot, stir in oats and set aside. Beat egg whites into a stiff foam with hand mixer or blender and reserve. Mix remaining dry ingredients together and stir in oatmeal/milk mixture. Fold in egg whites until mixture is well blended. . Spray pan with nonstick spray and cook pancakes until browned on both sides.
*Depending on how long you've let the oats sit, you may need to add a little extra water to the batter to thin it out. It will still be thicker than regular pancake batter

Sdevante September 24th, 2007, 08:06 PM Dont know if this has been said or not, I just skimmed the thread, but I use oats, vanilla soy milk, and some cinnamon sprinkled in and it's pretty good.
woodan September 25th, 2007, 01:32 PM Whatever you do, do not do what I did this morning. I normally go with 85g jumbo oats with 60g protein powder and 1/2 pint of milk blended together. I didn't have enough powder this morning so I put the same amount of oats and milk in a bowl with the rest of the protein powder I had and microwaved it. These oats were not meant for it. It was vile. I did managed to get it all down in the end. I won't be doing it again though.
MannishBoy September 25th, 2007, 01:36 PM If you are putting in protein powder into cooked oats, do it after they are cooked, not before. If you do it before it hardens into some kind of paste.

Yep, that's exactly what happened. The oats I have are massive as well and didn't go soft like quaker oats do. And my protein powder was chocolate flavor so I just had a bowl of sticky, brown slop. Appetising!
