View Full Version : Where ot find spotter/catcher for Smith machine? (Solo bench problem.)
RoughDraft September 22nd, 2007, 04:26 PM Recently purchased a Marcy/Impex smith machine. It's decent quality, but despite the fact that it has catchers running all along the unit, it's not much use if you bench to failure.
I'm looking to get some freestanding bar catchers to set on either side of the bar: if it fails, I'll be able to rest the bar on them.
To my amazement, I can't seem to find any online except for the Marcy C8 spotter/catcher: unfortunately, it's only sold in the UK.
Does anyone have any leads for something similar in the States? The Marcy is pictured here:

ssminnow September 22nd, 2007, 06:14 PM That is exactly what I am looking for too. I am not sure what model you have but I have the 3105. I found online that the 4100 has them build in already.
See the pic below. I called Impex and they wont sell them to me. SOB's! If you look at the very bottom, they slide on the smith bar's and you can set them to any height you want and hook them on. See part #'s 20 and 21 in the second picture.

I have the 3105, too. Small world. :)
Those latches would definitely take up far less space than the freestanding spotters, and I imagine they'd be cheaper, too. Why wouldn't Impex sell them to you? I think I'll try giving them a call. Would you happen to have a part number?
ssminnow September 22nd, 2007, 06:25 PM I called them yesterday. THey said they dont sell parts, just replacements. They want to know where you bought it and need serial numbers. THen you send them your damaged parts and they send you back replacements. I assume it would fit, but cant say for sure.
The only part numbers I know are 20 and 21. You can get the manual from their site.
Please let me know if you have any better luck than I did.
RoughDraft September 22nd, 2007, 06:28 PM Sure thing. I'll try calling them Monday. (Closed for the weekend.)
HevyMetal September 23rd, 2007, 12:32 AM SSMinnow.....I notice that Impex Smith you have, the bar doesn't travel vertical....it travels on a backward angle.
So if you ever rustle up or make or have made some safeties, my recommendation would be to turn the bench around and Leg press so that the bar travels slightly away from as you lift with legs.
I know I wouldn't feel too good about the bar travelling slightly backwards as I Leg-Pressed. (My Smith is straight vertical).
:)
ssminnow September 23rd, 2007, 11:51 AM Thanks heavy metal. Funny that you mention that. I tried some presses today with just the bar to see if all my efforts are worth it. I did just that, i layed down on the floor opposite the back so that when I lift, the weight goes away from me. THanks for looking out!
RoughDraft September 24th, 2007, 02:37 PM Called Impex today. The CS rep initially said that they didn't carry a 4100, but when I pointed out that it appeared on their website, she "manually" entered in an order for the Left/Right Safety Stop Frames. I'm told I'll get them in 5-10 days.
I only said I needed the parts, and was not quizzed on purchase date, serial #, etc. SSminnow, I would recommend that you don't mention you want the parts for a 3105 Smith.
As to whether they'll fit - I doubt Impex/Marcy changed the shape or cicumference of the Smith chrome bars, but we'll see.
ssminnow September 24th, 2007, 04:06 PM Thanks! Did they charge you for them?
ssminnow September 24th, 2007, 04:08 PM Also, did they ask you where you purchased it? What did you tell them you needed it for? Did you say yours were missing, damaged etc..???
RoughDraft September 24th, 2007, 06:20 PM I was not questioned at all. I simply said I had a 4100 and needed the two parts for it. She put me on hold to try to find information on the model, then came back and took the order. No payment was asked for.
If pressed, I was prepared to say I purchased the 4100 and the two pieces were missing from the package. I would've given the purchase info from the 3105, which was bought a few weeks ago.
Should they ask you for a serial number, I would give them either the one from the 3105, or one copied from a store's 4100. I seriously, seriously doubt they check this information at all.
And for what it's worth, I don't advocate subtrefuge as a rule...but I don't feel it's out of line to request two parts for a unit I just paid $380 for, especially since they could protect me from serious injury. And I would have happily paid for them if asked to.
ssminnow September 24th, 2007, 07:31 PM Awesome dude. Thanks for the info! I totally agree with you. I would have purchased the 4100 if it wasn't an inch taller then the 3105. That one wouldnt fit in my house. Plus, I offered to pay for the parts too.
