View Full Version : The Law Won't Keep Me Down

My job sucks. It's a life-draining, soul-sucking, disheartening stage in a career. Funny thing is...compared to most in my position, I've got it pretty good. And I can't honestly say that I hate it. How strange.

Some here will recognize me, many won't. I've taken a healthy break from this site and a relatively healthy break from...well...my health. I never thought I'd be one of the ones to regress. Guess I was wrong.

The brief background is that I finished law school in April and started my articling year (an apprenticeship type of thing required in Canada) at the end of May. I took the bar course until the end of July and have been working since, although I still have one exam at the beginning of November. Other than that, I'm immersed in my chosen career.

I started my transformation in February 2006, had lost about 50 lbs by August 2006 and run a triathlon, maintained relatively well through the winter but once I was finished school, it all went to shit. I couldn't seem to motivate myself and I was really enjoying eating (like most of us, I love food). Since that time, I've run another triathlon (and been utterly embarrassed by the pictures this time around) and tacked on about 25 lbs. I've had enough.

The weight goal is to be sub 200 by the new year. I'm currently sitting at about 230. I know what I need to do to achieve this goal. I just am worried that I can't maintain it.

My plan:

Two mornings a week - Swim
Three mornings a week - Bike
One morning and one evening a week - Run
Two or three sessions a week - Lift
One day/evening a week - Yoga (if I can fit it in)

Particular goals that come to mind:

- Sub 200 by January 1, 2008
- Run The Fall Classic 10k on November 18, 2007
- Run The First Half half marathon on February 10, 2008
- Run a Half Ironman sometime in 2008 (no goal race just yet)
- Fit into a 36" pant again (preferably in a 44" jacket too)

I'm sure I'll come up with more later, but those are the ones as of the start of the journal. I may edit this post later to add more.

Being that I want to get up early to hit the bike on the trainer in the morning, I better leave it all there for now...

I'm back!

Hey Silver in my lurking phase I went through all of your old journal, you were a big motivation to me and got me interested in trying this for myself. Really good to see you back on here. I know you'll meet your goals and this time be ready to maintain when you get there. Good Luck!

That's awesome! Are you excited? It's definitely harder when you don't train...hah...I just reran the same tri that I had first run last summer with very little training through this summer. I managed to significantly beat my time (came in under an hour, woo!) - mostly due to my newfound swimming ability - but also managed to puke right at the finish line. Hot stuff!

:dreamy: Hi B! Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome...it feels good!

One of my other goals during this time will be to focus at work. It's really hard sometimes, so I'm going to do my best to keep off of JSF and various other time sucking websites (stupid scrabble on facebook...) while I'm working. Not sure how I'll find the time to properly keep up with others and to post what's going on, but I'll do my best!

Workouts:
Last night - lifting
10 minute warmup on elliptical
3x Lat pulldown @90, 100, 110
3x DB BP @25, 30, 35
3x DB Bent Over Row @20, 20, 25
3x DB Shoulder Press @20, 20, 25
4x BB Squats @45, 115, 115, 115

This morning - LISS
20 minutes on the bike (yes, the time wasn't long but I didn't get up as early as I should have)

Off to a good start...now if only I could find my wallet...

Looking forward to you keeping us posted on your progress!

It's 10:00. I just got home from work. I'm glad I didn't have a workout planned for tonight. It's going to make going swimming tomorrow morning a difficult motivator. I plan on leaving work at 5:00 so that I can run with my local store at 6:00 tomorrow, though.

I really hope I have some time to catch up on journals tomorrow...

Great goals Silver, but I am concerend that your plan is too ambitious to be realistic?? Thats 10/11 workouts per week with your new job and all thats seems a lot ?? Not trying to throw a damper at all on the plans just want to be sure its doable? otherwise you will get disheartened at skipping workouts maybe ? Whatever GOOD LUCK:tu:

I have the same concerns, J. It would basically mean:

Sunday: AM Run
Monday: AM Swim, PM Lift
Tuesday: AM Bike
Wednesday: AM Swim, PM Run
Thursday: AM Bike, PM Lift
Friday: AM Bike
Saturday: Yoga

That's 10 a week, although I wouldn't mind getting a third session in the gym in there somewhere...

Considering I already missed this morning's swim (partly due to DOMS from Monday's lifting as well as sleeping in from a late night last night), there is definitely room for failing to fully meet the goals. Honestly, though...if I manage to do 75% of the workouts, I'm way ahead of the game. Realistically, I consider the swims and the yoga to be somewhat disposable workouts. They're important, but not critical to the weight loss itself. Swimming will help with the triathlons, obviously, and yoga will help overall with flexibility (which I need for my running), but if I miss them occasionally, it's not the end of the world.

Basically, I'm using the philosophy of "Shoot for the stars and you'll at least get to the moon." Or is it "shoot for the moon and even if you miss you'll land among the stars..."? I can never remember...

My eating isn't spectacular right now, so I've got to worry even more about that. I'm just finding it very difficult to make enough time to eat foods that are all "trackable" (in terms of cals and macros) and to actually measure it all out and what not. It's the one thing I've never really mastered - doing that quickly and efficiently.

So not the best week to start, but could have been worse...

I didn't run on Wednesday night because my legs hurt like crazy.

I didn't wake up early enough to bike on Thursday because I was up late reading Harry Potter 6.

I didn't lift on Thursday night because I was out running errands until nearly 9 on my way home.

I didn't bike on Friday morning because I suck balls.

I didn't go to yoga today, but I lifted real hard this morning and my back is aching like crazy now (in a good way). Bulgarians almost made me puke.

Lifting today
3x Assisted neutral grip pull ups: 70, 80, 90
3x Bent over BB row: 50, 50, 50
3x SLDL: 50, 50, 70
3x Decline BB BP: 95, 95, 115
3x Bulgarian Split Squats (3x each leg): 15, 12, 12

Also used today as a massive cheat day...why? Because I wanted a burger and donuts. Oh yeah, and the new pumpkin pie Blizzard. Mmm.

Managed to actually get out and run yesterday morning with the Running Room. Did 10 and 1s for something just shy of 6km.

Also of interest - fat free cottage cheese + low sugar maple and brown sugar oatmeal + cinnamon + splenda = lethal combination...I'm glad my office has a door.

So ran on Sunday, then got home late on Monday, spent last night reading (cursed reading...as soon as I finish The Deathly Hallows, I'll be able to focus on working out at night!), woke up late today and did my best to get to the Running Room tonight for 6:00. I left downtown at 5:00, which should have given me more than enough time to get to the RR (at least 10 -15 minutes to spare). It didn't. I didn't even get home until 6:05, and I live another 10 minutes from the RR. Goatballs, I need to move.

Didn't matter, though. I came home, got changed, threw on the kicks and hit the road. I managed a torturously slow 6.5 kms (somewhere around 38:30...used to do the same route a full 5 minutes faster). I could have done it faster, of course, but I was specifically trying not to push myself. I haven't been running and don't want to overdo it too quickly....I'll save overdoing it for when I've been working really hard and want to ruin my entire training regimen, like I usually do! :tu:

Tomorrow, I'll be up early to ride, I promise! (whilst maintaining the option to sleep, if need be)...yeah, that's right, I'm hardcore.

on a bit of a roll.

biked for about 35 min or so yesterday during Firefly again and then ran 7.5km in the pissing rain this morning...biggest goal these days is to try to keep the HR low when running...it's very difficult. For me...keeping it low when running means sub 170. Even a pretty easy jog gets it up to 160+ for me. It barely takes a hill to raise it over 170.

Kind of annoying, really.

Is there a reason that you want to keep your heart rate below 170? Sorry if you wrote about this previously, I don't reading about it.

Silver
October 2nd, 2007, 03:27 PM
Thanks Paul.

Yeah, the reason is just the sort of basic aerobic v. anaerobic / lactic threshold / HR Zone training stuff. Basically, my max HR (determined through testing) is 188. 170 puts me at about 90% of max. If I want to get into longer distance stuff, maintaining a HR of >90% of max isn't particularly conducive to success.

My most recent zone numbers for running are something like:

1 - Recovery 110 - 141
2 - Extensive Endurance 142 - 151
3 - Intensive Endurance 152 - 158
4 - Sub-Threshold 159 - 165
5a - SuperThreshold 166 - 169
5b - Anaerobic Endurance 170 - 175
5c - Power 176 - 184

I believe I'm supposed to try to maintain zone 2 or low zone 3 most of the time.

Ain't happening - that's where I am when I walk reasonably quickly. I'll keep working on it, though.

I ended up in bed by 9:30 last night to guarantee I'd be up early enough to ride this morning. Wrong again, woke up at 4:30 (goal was 6:00), went back to sleep until 5, then 5:30...then 6:30, which didn't allow me enough time to ride, so went back to sleep until 7:00 . Left work at 4:30 and made it in time for the run - which was awful. Worst run in a long time. Felt strong at the start and by about 15 minutes in, was totally dying. Died for another...oh...25 minutes and then finally succumbed (which was good because the run was over).

Hey man... I have had plenty of days like that for the past week. I actually planned to start getting into better shape a week ago, but here I am, loads of bad meals later and no exercise... :nono:

and what's worse is I am going to Hawaii in about 10 days, and I'm not physically ready in the slightest. Granted, I am hella excited, but I'll still be snorkling as a tubby. >.> I won't keep my fat from keeping me from a good time though! At least I'll be exercising while snorkling..

I read through your journal and it gave me a ton of inspiration. I now have the mindset to start my goals. Especially since my trip is soon, I need to start getting ready for it, especially since I am going to swim about a mile straight while there (In a safe area w/o sharks, or so I am told...) which is something I have never done before.

I'm sick of these moobs, sick of the fat... not eating right... it's all ending tomorrow. I'm actually going to post postits all over the place (though my roommate may not like that much ) and those should motivate me.

I'm going for 3 miles of walking/running everyday from here on out. No matter what... I have to push. I want to look like Vin Diesel so bad, and this is my chance, while I'm young and healthy. No job at the moment, only college, so there really is no excuse as to why I don't currently workout/diet, but like I said, that's going to change tomorrow.

No cheat days for me... I've learned that they can ruin my entire plan. I normally see results after about a week or so, so that's motivating.

Anyhow, I applaud you on your efforts and I know you can meet your goals and possibly beat them. Just gotta stick it out, just like I will need to.

Good luck. And for anyone that care, my AIM is Archiv3, if you ever want to chat. :tucool:

Very cute. Is he a lab?

Now you'll have a running partner. :)

Yep, chocolate lab.

Apparently I have to wait until he's about two to prevent damage to his hips and what not before I can run with him...but that's definitely part of the motivation...

Ran today. 5k was hard. How laziness/being busy/eating too much can affect things...

Had dinner with a bunch of triathlete friends tonight. That's motivation.

Hey, Silver.. welcome back... Cute dog..

Yeah... it's tough at your job and it is going to stay like that for a long time. I would try to structure work-out goals that are doable instead of perfect. I can't imagine you getting in more than one workout a day. Try alternating it cardio and weights. Also -- I would aim for 5 days a week -- 6 at the most. You need to have a break or you will break down.

I am so sorry you have to go through this .. but I must admit I am envious. I herniated a disc Sept 2 and have not been able to work out with weights since and my first really serious cardio was today -- when I could hit 35 minutes. I though I was going to die. So I know how you felt on your run.

Maintaining with incremental improvements might be a good goal. That is what I am trying to do. But I know how discouraging it can be -- it sucks when one is not in the shape one was before and circumstances don't permit getting back there or at least getting back there at the same pace and ease that was once available.

Congrats on finishing law school ... that is a mile-marker you will reap the benefits from for a really long time... :tu:

Haha, kinda. Or the dog did that. Or both. Or work. Or all of it. Either way. There just isn't enough time in a day! (or the past four months  )

Thankz Z! I'd like to be back fulltime. I'm going to try!

So that's it? No "hey I'm back"? No "gee I missed you all"?

Frankly, I'm disappointed.

Now, do I start a new journal? Or renew this one? Or the older, better one?

I wasn't good to myself last year. I did well in the early part of the year, then went on my big road trip and came back already used to eating fast food all the time. When I started the bar course, I never really got past that and between the time commitments of that combined with starting work full time and then getting a puppy and now taking on a part time TA'ing gig (that pays nearly as well as my more-than-full-time job for about 1/4 the hours), I lost my motivation and/or could not force myself to make the time to do it all.

I'm now sitting at 239 lbs (was 241.5 two days ago). I feel like I'm starting fresh. I've been walking for almost an hour a day since mid to late November (with the dog) but overeating because of poor meal planning and poor choices ("Can I get a Filet-o-Fish Meal with a Diet Coke and a Double Cheeseburger w/o pickles please?"). At least it's still Diet Coke (or preferably Coke Zero).

I'm having sleep issues at the moment (the dog does not want to go to sleep until 1am); but I think I'm just going to work through those and be tired for a bit. I've committed to starting a Half Ironman training program on Monday. This plan is not insane, but still will require some dedication. It is purely endurance based as it does not include any strength training. While I understand and appreciate the value of weight training, my goal is to run a HIM this year, and I do not have enough time to do all of the endurance training + strength training...no matter how beneficial it would be. That's not to say that I'll never go and lift weights, but rather that it will be based on convenience and desire and will likely not be overly intense when I do.

I wish I came back bearing better news about myself...but this is reality.

He likes beer...he knocked a can over once from some guy on the street and started drinking it up. He was like 11 weeks old at the time.

Start a new one... 'cause this one pretty much brings the suck.

Good luck with HIM this year. Too much swimming for my tastes.

She could be. Maybe it's just the wig, overused eyeliner, strong jawline, and bar-fight nose that dissuaded me.

I will start a new journal. I have some regrets about the past year...but am still thrilled that we got Angus, even if it's been hard on me.

One of my "problems" with JSF is that I often don't have time to both write my own journal (which is more for my own satisfaction, of course) as well as read others. I don't know exactly how to reconcile that.

I'll work on that.
