Before i go to the gym? after, or during? Im really low on cash, so im looking for something, cheap, but still works perfect.

i've heard some people say that they always try to get their protein from food, others really like liquids, and some use both. i myself like to use a combination, but getting most of my protein from food and using shakes PWO and at lunch for a tasty beverage.

i use regular old whey protein from wal-mart. there may be some better, but i'm not a scientist and all i can do is read the labels. doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference between most of them to me. i'm sure one of the more veteran members of this forum will come and slap the whey right outta me for my choice lol.

So far, after checking the GNC site, i saw the GNC Pro PerformanceŽ 100% Whey Protein - Chocolate. Is that good? I dont like that its chocolate though, if it was vanilla, ill be so happy, but no pain no gain.

So is that whey protien shake good or should i get a diffrent one from GNC? Its also in my price range...

I second the walmart choice. I prefer the vanilla flavor.

I like to use the whey from Sam's Club (which may be the same sold by WalMart). It's EAS 100% Whey Protein in the purple bag. I've only used the chocolate but they have vanilla as well. The chocolate tastes really good, even when mixed with water. I like being able to buy it in town and not have to pay shipping charges or wait for a mail order or internet order.

here in the bronx in new york, there isnt a wallmart, im suprised there isnt one here yet, but there isnt. The only health place we have here is GNC. Everything else is mcdonalds, chinese foods.

Even the supermarket i shop at, i find it bad. They have the vegeteble in the same section as the chips and ice cream...

So GNC is the only place i can buy my whey protein.

I found this great list of foods im gonna eat from no on in my diet.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/guide3.htm

They even put up a combination of these into meals devided for morning, evening and afternoon.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/guide10.htm

So those are the foods im most likely gonna eat. Mostly the simple ones though. Like tuna sandwiches, Oatmeal, Broccoli, chicken, & rice (My mom makes rice and chicken all the time, Latino family you know, ill just tell her to give me like a bunch of vegetebles and salads on it)

wal-mart isn't in new york city several reasons, a couple google searches on that should help you find out why. Target carries the exact same brand of whey as wal-mart, it's called Body Fortress. GNC costs whey (lol) too much in my opinion.

here's a link to other outlets for that product:

i eat pretty much the same thing every day myself: oatmeal, fruit, veggies, chicken tuna, brown rice. i go for red meat 2 times a week (still cutting) and i tend to go for a cheat meal once every two weeks. i even try to stay away from ANY seasoning, but that's just me. seasonings make me want to cheat.

Internet ftw :) Look at At Large's Nitrean (sponsor here) or some of the other sites to order protein powders from: www.bodybuilding.com , www.dpsnutrition.net ; www.bulknutrition.com , etc.

Also, a lot of people consider protein powders to be expensive. I find when I do the math, they are actually pretty cheap per serving when you compare them to many other protein sources on a gram of protein cost basis...even after recent price increases.

I second the internet.
Even after paying for shipping, buying your stuff online will be WHEY cheaper then GNC. Even from Canada (where the shipping charges are probably doubled due to the border crossing and the snow banks) I can order stuff from most american online retailers cheaper then I can get it from GNC and most places have the stuff delivered within a couple days (plus most places give you a free T-shirt, I never saw one of them when I shopped at GNC).

As far as which one, if you go to www.bodybuilding.com I believe Optimum nutrition (ON) has one of the cheapest protein powders and although I have never tried it myself I have head ALLOT of people on a tight budget who love the stuff. Realistically pretty much any whey protein for after your workouts will do, its just a matter of finding something you like thats in your budget.

A very popular choice for taste, result, and price is 100% ON Whey Gold Standard...24 grams of protein per serving with added BCAAs...It's definately a good bargain...30 bucks for 5 lbs and the taste is one of the best....as you expand your training and nutrition, you can try others to see what best suits your body and your need

if you have a vitamin shoppe by you, their prices are as good as online and u dont pay shipping. i recommend Optimum nutrition, it is what ive always used. the 5 pounder is 37.99 there compared to 38.99 on bodybuilding plus shipping.

I really like ON, particularly the Chocolate Mint and Rocky Road flavors. I recently got a 5.15 and 2 2.07 lb tubs for a total of $50 at Amazon (they had a coupon deal going on).

It's probably not the best quality of protein, but I'm poor and not looking to become a pro bodybuilder anyway. It also tastes really good.

I've only tried double rich chocolate, but so far, ON is the best tasting brand and I've also had pretty good results with it.

i cant really order anything from online, so im stuck with whatever they have at GNC, and there really isnt a target anywhere around where i live at.

http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2133619&cp=2167077.2325087&parentPage=family

They alos have a 3LB one for 25 bucks, its strawberry, so i think imma get that for now... I think as long as it has protein its good.

i cant really order anything from online,
Why not?
Do you not have a mailing address?
No bank account?

Those are about the only things you need to order stuff online. Even without a credit card, you can always find a website that accepts paypal, and all you need for a paypal account is to have a bank account :tucool:. *edit* I just checked and bodybuilding.com accepts not only paypal, but e-cheques.

The idea of ordering stuff online might seem a little overwhelming at first, but its really pretty simple once you get set up and getting setup isn't even all that hard.

But in the end your right, if your happy paying the price, and happy with the taste, then whatever protein shake you get at GNC will be just fine.

Are there any gyms nearby? A lot of them sell supplements or can refer you somewhere cheaper than GNC. I live in a town way smaller than the Bronx and I can name five places other than GNC to buy protein. Plus, some of the GNC stuff tastes horrible.

I don't know what your goal is, but this is absolulety FALSE. You don't need protein shakes to be successful in transforming your body. Especially at 16 years of age.

I know plenty of natural bodybuilders, strength athletes, baseball players, hoop players, and even high school athletes (where I do a lot of speaking) who are very successful without protein shakes.

I would read up on the stickies to familiarize yourself with the advantages and importance of proper nutrition.

The other thing I would suggest is to never purchase a supplement without researching first what it is used for.

Good luck bud :tu:

I find GNC to be a little pricey. They mark stuff up and then have you become a Gold-card member that entitles you to a reduced price. But the reduced price is still higher than what you'd pay elsewhere in many instances.

Another thing they do is hide the good deals behind shelves and keep the pricey stuff out in your line of sight.

At least that's what they do here.

So when I go in there I immediately start poking around in the back shelves. This works until I'm assailed by a salesperson who wants to help by gently nudging me to the pricey stuff.

If you can afford on-line Nitrean go for it. This one has a cassein complex in it.

Personally I don't like any pro powder that uses artificial sweeteners like Aspartame etc, regardless of how good the matrix is.

I like the ones that use Stevia. But around here the ones that use Stevia seem to be limited to 100% Whey isolate and the like.

So I go with those (Kaizen).

Every once in awhile you can luck out at Costco. depending on what they have on hand at the time.

Like Mastover said....you probably don't need half the pro powder some would have you believe is necessary.

I use mine during and post workout....other times if I'm pressed for time and don't want involve rustling up a meal.

Of course, usually the bigger the tub you buy the cheaper it is. By far.

In a perfect world of price and availibity I would go with a powder that consists of a whey/cassein matrix either plain or with a sweetener such as Stevia. If it's plain you can add your own sweetener at random.

I hate all the chemical sweeteners...but that's just me.
