View Full Version : Lifting & Cardio the Same Day?
Wahnsinn August 27th, 2007, 01:02 PM Hello everyone, me again.
If I'm in the beginning stages of losing some fat, but also building some muscle, would there be negative impacts to doing cardio and lifting on the same day?
If not, should I do them at different times of day or could they be done consecutively?
If consecutively, is there one I should do first (cardio to get my heart going and then lift, or lift first so I don't tire out my muscles with cardio)?
I'm currently lifting Mon/Wed/Fri, cardio the others.
Thanks!
Tim
TheTransition August 27th, 2007, 01:12 PM A common misconception is for beginners to think they'll be able to gain muscles while cutting...Though its possible for the genetically gifted, but in general dont get too discouraged if you dont see any lean mass gain...Thats where the bulk comes in....Cardio and Weight lifting is another one of those "can go either ways" topic...But yea, cardio after weights is fine, not only wont you tire out your muscles, but youll be in a low glycogen state, where fat loss will be more effective...However, if you want to maximize on the fat loss...cardio on the empty stomach is the way to go (though its not for everyone)

Wait wait wait... Cardio on an empty stomach? This is the first I heard of it... I'm trying to lose a lot of weight, and right now I'm having supper around 8:30, and working out around 9:30 (both cardio and lifting, depending on the day), and then having a small protein meal (shake, now) after the workout. Am I doing something wrong? I've posted this a few times and everyone else seems to think it's a good routine...

Dude, deep breath. :) You're setting yourself up for some serious (and totally unnecessary) frustration if you begin to question whether you're doing something wrong every time you read about an approach to fat loss that isn't part of your current plan.
You can join an elite group of millions of people that have achieved significant amounts of fat loss without ever doing fasted cardio. That's not a knock against the approach, I'm just saying nobody is misleading you by not insisting that fasted cardio be part of your plan.
I'd suggest you read John's daily updates from August 9th (http://www.johnstonefitness.com/news/aug_2007_news_archive.php#08092007) and 10th (http://www.johnstonefitness.com/news/aug_2007_news_archive.php#08102007). Let your personal results be your guide as to what is working and what isn't.
(You can also search the forums for more info, but be prepared to find some threads that go absolutely nowhere.)

i agree completely, there are millions of routines out there and different ones will work for different ppl. Theres no single 'golden' routine. Morning fasted cardio is also known as LISS, theres plenty of topics here on the boards just do a search of it :). Some prefer it, some dont. Just stick with somethin you enjoy doing, otherwise ur just gonna fall out of routine if ur hating it.
wahnsinn: i separate cardio from lifting as i eat differently before and after each. Combining the two is fine as well, i made plenty good progress doing that a few months back. Just make sure u lift first otherwise u'll be too exhausted from the cardio.
Azure August 28th, 2007, 01:48 AM You guys are telling me that while cutting...which I would be doing now trying to get rid of all the fat around my midsection....I cannot gain muscle definition on my arms.
Because I am...very much so. Pretty hard to exercise as much as I do and NOT see any definition on my arms and legs. Sure my midsection still has fat on it....but I think there is a 'curse' for that. Loosing all the fat on the rest of your body 'first' and the belly last.
TheTransition August 28th, 2007, 02:13 AM Muscle definition isnt quite the same as muscles...As a matter of fact, thats one of the reasons why ppl even cut in the first place..I was just saying that one cant expect to go from a 15inch to 17 inch arms while doing a cut...bulk yes...cut rarely
