View Full Version : Bad headaches during workout?
NoWhining August 23rd, 2007, 11:30 PM School is up to full speed and I have been trying to hit the gym full speed as well. However my last two works outs were ended very early by the onset of a horrible headache.
Both times it occured after my 3rd set of bench presses. Seems like as I was passing the hard part in the push my head began to hurt and as soon as I put the weight down it just started pounding!
I am not one to get headaches often so I am really not sure whats causing this.
My diet has been mostly chicken and water as of late, so my first thought is that it may be in my diet?
Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks

I would get that checked out. Any head and neck pain caused by the strain of lifting could be a sign of a much larger problem. Lifting causes brief spikes in blood pressure, and when your blood pressure is insanely high, all sorts of things can happen, like bursting blood vessels.
Many, many years ago, I wrestled and twinged by neck. After that, I would get pounding headaches any time I did anything remotely strenuous, but I lifted through it anyway. Looking back now, it was probably the worst thing I could have done.
I would recommend getting it checked out to be safe. At the very least (if you're not that concerned or hate the doctors) I would take some time off from lifting to let whatever is going on "heal." I just wouldn't mess around with headaches caused by lifting.
emanphx August 24th, 2007, 12:57 AM Another possibility, which I mention from experience, is that breathing properly makes a big difference when I'm exercising. If I'm not breathing properly, big exhales with the exertion part of the exercise and big inhales the rest of the time, I can quickly get really bad headaches, especially as I'm trying to force my body to lift heavier than it wants to! I'd certainly recommend that you also concentrate on your breathing, it may be the cause of your problem (hopefully it's not something serious, but I'd certainly heed Hockey4's concerns). Breathing properly can't hurt, anyhow, it can only help things.
Hoping it's the easy answer,
Emmanuel
MannishBoy August 24th, 2007, 01:04 AM Chicken and water with nothing else? No veggies? No healthy fats? No carbs?
If so, fix that now. That's unhealthy to say the least. I don't know if it is the cause, but it sure can't help.

Sounds like your diet could use some scrutiny.

It definitely needs some improvements, but at the time I figured it was better and cheaper then fast food while I get moved into my new place and start a busy semester.
My headache still hurts at this point so I am going to get some sleep and see how I feel in the morning. Hope its nothing bad.
iceweaselsarecool August 24th, 2007, 03:51 AM It could definitely be breathing.
I was taught to breath between reps and hold my breath during reps. It keeps the intra-abdominal pressure higher, helping you to stay tight and strong throughout the movement. Not everyone does it that way, but it seems to work well for me.
NotNamedDan August 24th, 2007, 08:53 PM I wouldn't put off seeing a doctor on this one. My first thought was blood pressure. We had a guy at my boxing gym who was getting crazy headaches when he would work hard, and it turned out to be a blood pressure issue.
Don't be dangerous, get that checked out. Really. And get some damned carbs in your body.
TheTransition August 24th, 2007, 09:24 PM I had the same problems...Usually when I go heavy or pretty much exhausted from my other sets, I get a pounding headache...Normally its the breathing problem...You need to get in a deep inhale and exhale when your working out...Some people hold their breath in exercises like the crunch, Bench Press, Leg Raises etc...Remember your heart is forced to work hard whenever theres strenous activity involved..Secondly, is your diet...Youd be surprise what the lack of carbs can do to your system....Mood swings, Headaches, Exhaustion, that nauseous feeling, etc...Thried, is your water intake during workout...If that doesnt do it, than a trip to the doctors is due
