View Full Version : Leg Loss?
JewelTheif Thu, August 23rd, 2007, 01:20 AM I am a 15 year old male, and I weight about 150 pounds and am about 5 "6-7 in height. I have no fat really on my upper body, but I have a ton of fat on my legs and thighs. You can't really see it when your wearing clothes though, but it's uncomfortable for me and I would like those nice skinny athletic legs. So I want to lose fat on my thighs and legs, not build muscle. Can anybody give me a workout schedule along with a description of each workout so I know what it is. I don't have any equipment except two 15 Pound Dumb bells. Thanks. :tu:

I doubt you have a ton of fat on your legs at 150 pounds and 5' 6-7". I am just about 5'7" and have been a lot of different weights for that height during my life. When I was in my late teens I competed in athletics at 128 pounds. When I was really fat, I weighed a little over 230 pounds.
You might have genetically strong legs. In which case nothing you can do will make them skinny. Plus, when you say "athletic" legs, have you looked at some athletes? Skinny isn't usually athletic for legs.
My advice for you is to realize that you are only 15, just at the point where you may be developing your adult physique. It's better not to worry too much about how you look now but how you will look in three or four years. And the right way to worry about it is to learn to lift safe and hard, and eat well. Make sure you get enough nutrition and sleep.

Well, take a look for yourself (http://i13.tinypic.com/62t0pbd.jpg).

Yeah you have fat there but it can't be a ton. I'd be really surprised if it were as much as 15 pounds for both legs. Probably more like 8-10.
Don't worry. It's not permanently there unless you allow it. The stuff that's really hard to get rid of is the abdominal fat.

You didn't take that photo at the most flattering angle for your leg, either. A straight on shot while standing up might be a better indicator.

So how can I get that fat removed to get them skinny legs?

You can't spot reduce, which makes just removing fat from your legs (outside surgery) all but impossible. If you want to lose fat on your legs, you need to lose overall BF. However, you don't seem exceptionally heavy for your height/age, so you don't have that much to lose. I wouldn't worry about it if I was you, but if you're intent on losing weight, make sure you're on a really good meal plan. Also, I wouldn't drop much below 140 at your height. You don't want to look like Nicole Richie :nono:

You can add muscle mass to them, but just working out your legs won't just lose fat on your legs. That whole "do a million crunches" to lose your gut routine doesn't work. Likewise, doing "a million leg exercises" and having skinny legs doesn't work. Like I said before, you can't spot reduce. Your body loses fat from everywhere and doesn't ask you to pick and choose what you'd like.
KingOfPie Thu, August 23rd, 2007, 11:46 PM Your answer is cardio.

Don't worry about it now. Learn to lift safe, lift hard. You're gonna use that fat while you grow for a couple years. It's all going to get easier if you focus on building strength now.

Oddly enough you can in this case. Just make sure they are big compounds, go heavy, go hard. Keep the rest between sets short enough that it's not comfortable. At your age, this approach can have amazing results.
Note that you can't "spot reduce". But leg exercises are great for your purposes here. They will burn the fat on your legs (and everywhere else you have fat).
If I was you I would learn to lift safely and hard. And by lift I mean squats, deads, rows and presses. With emphasis on squats and deads.
JewelTheif Fri, August 24th, 2007, 04:27 PM I know about Squats, I don't know what deads, rows and presses are though. The only equipment I have is two 15 pound dumb bell weights.
JewelTheif Sat, August 25th, 2007, 09:00 PM Bump. Read post above this one.

It's going to help a lot of you have a chinning bar. Then you can use chin ups instead of rows.
Presses you can substitute pushups in the beginning. If you can do 20 pushups, then raise your feet - if you put your feet up on the second stair of a staircase, then do those. When you can do those in sets of 20, then you can use the dumbells to row on the pushups:

Even though 15# is not that big a deal, this will probably last you for some time.
You say you know squats, but if you only have the dumbells, then you better do them on one foot. Start with Bulgarians
ECot87cKuks
Then graduate to pistols:

As to the deadlifts, with small dumbells, again, the idea is one leg at a time

But you will save yourself some time if you can get hold of a barbell and some plates. Yard sales, craig's list, etc., usually have opportunities.

Yes, but only because you have the potential to lose fat all over your body. There is no exercise or activity that can reduce fat in any specific area on the body while excluding other areas. If you want to lose fat in one area, you must lose fat in many areas. That's how the body works.

Alright, now that you tell me this, do tredmills really work? Cause' I can just get one of those and be set, right?

A treadmill is just a way to run without actually traveling anywhere.
danboback Sun, September 2nd, 2007, 01:09 AM Yes a treadmill will be fine, the same goes for running outside, swimming, playing sports, riding bikes, using an eliptical, or roller blading.

Treadmill is OK exercise except for impact if you weigh too much. But a good one which will last is quite expensive.
