View Full Version : Wrists/Forearms--Sharp Pain When Curling
Sam8813B April 22nd, 2004, 07:49 PM What is going on?! Whenever I do my curls, my forearms and wrists start to HURT so bad. Not like a muscle soreness, but like a sharp pain in my bones. Im not positive if its actually in my bones, but its definately not regular muscle soreness. Could anyone help me out?
karatetricker April 22nd, 2004, 07:53 PM I've had this happen too with straight bar curls. Is that how it happened with you or were you using dumbbells?
brezman April 22nd, 2004, 10:06 PM This seems to be a common problem with many people. Try an EZ-curl bar, or try using wraps.
If that doesn't help (and it likely won't... just the way it usually works), simply don't do curls, your body is telling you not to.
There are plenty of ways work the arms without curls.
The Bied April 23rd, 2004, 12:07 PM I used to have exact the same problem until I realized my form was off. I was moving my wrists too much when curling, instead of letting my biceps do the work. Once I focused on isolating my movements better, the pain disappeared.
Not sure if that's the problem because I don't know how long you've been lifting, but figured I'd bring it up.
Einar April 23rd, 2004, 12:17 PM I have the exact same problem with curls. But I just bite my lip and go on..
It might be my forearms that are too weak? If that's the case maybe it would be good to add an exercise to work them seperately.
Danny Noonan April 23rd, 2004, 01:50 PM I have the same problem. It started with straight bar curls a few years ago, and now using the the E-Z bar hurts too. Stick with DB curls: standing, seated, incline, reverse. Lots of variations. DB hammer curls (http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Brachioradialis/DBHammerCurl.html) are my favorite (but I don't swing my body like the guy in the video). :claphigh:

Like what? How are you going to train your biceps if you don't do any curls at all? Or do you mean don't do barbell curls?
haven97 April 23rd, 2004, 02:21 PM I had that problem when I first started out... I goes away as you get used to lifting. But in any event I found the EZcurl bar was much better than the straight bar. DB's will definetly help!
take5 April 23rd, 2004, 03:14 PM I don't mean to hijack the thread, but though I usually do dumbbell curls, I tried straight-bar curls last time and, maybe because I ever-so-slightly tried to adjust my footing in the middle of a set, felt this awful pain in my back, shoulder and neck and still feel it if I try to make certain sudden movements. I've been afraid to workout since (this was Saturday). I'll try again on Saturday or Monday.
And I'll definitely be going back to hammers.
Danny Noonan April 23rd, 2004, 03:18 PM Like what? How are you going to train your biceps if you don't do any curls at all? He could train them indirectly (but well) through heavy back work like BB/DB rows and weighted chins.
brezman April 23rd, 2004, 04:14 PM Yeah thats what I meant, pull-ups are a great way to hit the biceps, as well as the back.
