View Full Version : Had hard chest and tris workout..today... not sore at all.. whats up?
maxxym August 22nd, 2007, 10:03 AM Something strange is going on. Yesterday, I had AWESOME chest and triceps workouts. But I woke up this morning and I am not sore at all..My chest is not sore, my triceps are not sore..I am not sure why. I was lifting pretty hard. I was doing last set to failure. Maybe it's because I am eating clean and drink those Whey shakes after each workout? Maybe that helps the recovery?
I really had a good pump during my workout yesterday. At the end I did crunches...when I tried to lift myself up from the floor, my arms gave up and I simply couldn't do it!
What is up with this? Is it because I am taking Whey Protein shakes right after workout? Is it because I am eating clean? Does that help the recovery?
I am little confused why I am not sore today. I really really really had an awesome workout yesterday and I kept saying "Man, I am going to be hurting tomorrow" but I am not....
Any ideas?
iceweaselsarecool August 22nd, 2007, 10:14 AM Who wants to be sore?
Maybe you'll get sore later today.
If not, no big deal.

I wrote in your journal but I'll write it again. Soreness is not a good indication of progress. Just make sure you are improving your performace (less rest, add more weight, more reps, etc. etc. etc.), and that'll tell you more about your progress than soreness. I personally don't like the soreness.
maxxym August 22nd, 2007, 10:19 AM Thanks guys! I guess I will keep it up then...
skulldugery August 22nd, 2007, 11:12 AM Maxxym,
I think this is a really good question, and would be interested if anyone has any scientific answer to it. I would, and have formed the same theory as you did when confronted with the same variables you listed.
Maybe your body is getting used to this particular workout? Same weight, routine, etc. Perhaps going heavier or trying different exercises to confuse those muscles. You gotta keep em guessing! If you don't, maybe this is the indicator...no soreness.

As has been said above, soreness is not indicative of anything but soreness.
Well, I suppose it could be indicative of improper nutrition or hydration around workouts or just doing something new.
If he is still progressing with loads or work capacity, I wouldn't worry about necessarily changing things just because he isn't sore. Not that changing things up is bad. I rotate plans on 3-5 week cycles these days but didn't have to do that as much when I was starting out.
I rarely get truly sore these days when I do full body workouts, but I still can progress. I do get a bit sore if I switch to an upper/lower split, but that still pales in comparison to what I got when I was just beginning to lift after years off.
jimmydean012 August 22nd, 2007, 11:53 AM I usually only get sore if I'm working a muscle group that hasn't been worked particularly hard recently.
maxxym August 22nd, 2007, 11:55 AM I change things up. I use proper weights....
My chest does feel full today and I had problems washing my face this morning...you know that feeling that you have no energy in your arms/muscles....that's how I felt.. I am just not sore at all...
Oh well... I guess that's a good thing. It very well might be because of my diet.. who knows..
goonie August 22nd, 2007, 12:50 PM If you're able to repeat the same exercises, but with increased volume/intensity of some kind, then your previous workouts and recovery should be judged a success. This is a much better indicator of effectiveness than simple soreness. Don't switch things up to such a degree where it gets confusing trying to evaluate in this manner. If you've tapped into a system that is producing steady gains, ride it for what it's worth. You should be able to tell from your results when it's time to switch things up.
If you're focusing more on your overall nutrition than you have in the past, that could very well make a positive contribution to your recovery ability.
However, if you must feel soreness to feel like you've accomplished something, I recommend at the end of your workout dropping a 25lb plate from about thigh high onto your foot. If this doesn't work, increase the weight and/or height of these plate drops until you feel like this is working for you, but I would advise against taking these sessions to failure. :blank:

Soreness doesn't really indicate anything other than soreness. Don't worry about it.

At the end of a year you lift over 100 times as much as at the start:
(Check: 1.1 ^ 51 = 129.1299 ....)
That's kind of aggressive.
