My take is to start with reps in the 10-15 rep range to learn the movements and to give your joints time to strengthen as they are slower than muscles to respond to training.
Lift as heavy as you can, staying a rep or so from failure on your last set. Add weight as you can.
After a couple of months of training in this rep range, you can probably more safely start to get into the lower reps/higher percentage of one rep maximum range.

Indeed. Start with higher reps, but also work to get yourself stronger.

+1 on more reps.
I was starting to pile on weight and goofed up on a deadlift and delayed my progress.:bang:
When you first start off you have weak core and supporting muscles. Also perfect form and total concentration beats swinging and bragging about your numbers.
