hi everyone my name is Kevin.

i will be attending a state university in the fall and want to get into some sort of sport or club. when i was much younger 4-7 grade so 10-13 years old i swam competitively and made it to new england championships so i was a good swimmer.

my question is after almost 6 years ive lost all stamina i once had, basically im left with great swimming ability but thats hardly half the battle in a sport like swimming.

would it be possible or probable that after all those years i could come back, i know you need to be in amazing shape to swim would it be possible for me to get back into the sport and have a change at the college level?:D

I say go for it.

Can you join some sort of swim club? Most likely there will be others who are out of shape as well.

Half the battle is learning proper technique....and swimming is probably the best form of exercise that exists.

I would give anything to be around a swimming pool each day.

Just put your mind too it.....put in more laps, more hours....and you'll be well on your way.

It's definitely possible. It just takes a little time. You might as well get going with training.

Maybe, maybe not. You're not going to know until you get out there and do it.

Swimming performance at the 4-7th grade level is nothing to go on for recruitment at the college level. You'll need to demonstrate, by the end of the school year, that you're capable of performing and training at a high level. Join the club team, train hard, perform very well, and go out for the university team next year.

well i said 4-7. which might sound insignificant but its the difference between competitive swimming at age 9-11 and 12-14 which is huge. i don't know how well you know the sport but it gets serious at around age 13

I swam competitively the last three years of high school. Sorry about the "5th," I mistyped.

Also, I didn't mean that you didn't do well at that age, but rather that a college coach is not going to put much stock in it since you haven't continued to swim competitively up until now. You should keep in mind that your body is physically a lot different than it was when you were younger. I don't know how much you've been in the water in the meantime, but I would count on being a bit more than rusty when you start up in terms of technique. So, don't just emphasize the conditioning -- move through the basics first and take care of anything that's there before you really get going with the conditioning.

ya i really wish my high school had a team. i would have done that in a heartbeat. i do live on the water i mean its not like i haven't swam in 5 years, i am a lifeguard. but like you said my body is a lot different now. o well i sent the coach an email i guess I'll wait and see
