I just got back in town after going to the Boston Marathon to watch my dad run. It was a great race. Very very hot day though and lots of people had to get first aid. For the first time my dad didn't get to finish the race due to an injury, but we were all happy that he got to start and shocked that he made it ten miles. His doctor didn't think he'd be able to run in it at all.

Oops, left this off. . .another interesting link:

Statistics of % Who Finished by State (http://www.bostonmarathon.com/cfm_Public/2004/pg_StatisticsDrilldown1.htm)

No surprise that everyone in Hawaii finished on such a hot day, but everyone in Alaska?

By Countries of Residence Too (http://www.bostonmarathon.com/cfm_Public/2004/pg_StatisticsDrilldown2.htm)

EDIT: Added Countries link. Didn't see it before.

No, but my Dad's family is from all around New England (Boston, Martha's Vineyard, Baltimore, Pennsylvania). During the weekend before the race we had a family reunion at Martha's Vineyard. It was fun. . . about 42 relatives made it out. And about 20 of them came out to the marathon on Monday. :)

OMG
sounds like a blast!
I love the Vineyard, the Cape, and Nantucket. All nice places to spend the summer....

Tell me about it. The 86 degrees on Monday almost made me cry I was so happy. I rode my bike in so much cold and wet weather this winter that the sunshine and warmth on the weekend and on Mon was just like paradise.

On the other hand it was really hot around noon for the marathon guys.

Btw Freemason, how old is your dad?

Well, regardless of his actual age I think it is awesome that he is in a shape that he can do marathons at an age when he has a 24 year old daughter.

Argh, eventually I want to take a shot at the Boston Marathon. My father's best friend run it and he finished in about about 4 hours 40 minutes. Not to shabby for an old man who used to be out of shape and smoke heavily up until about a year and a half ago.

I ran 9 miles that same day, I don't know how they do it. It wasn't so much the heat that killed me but the wind. Running in the direction of the wind nearly killed all my energy.

He's 53. His 2003 Boston Marathon time was 3:29. (Since he didn't get to finish it this time, I don't have a time for this year.)

And yeah, I agree with all of you. For those of us not running the marathon, what a great day! :claplow:

Me too, just got back to Seattle last night. We spent the whole week out there. Monday was beautiful, but too hot for the runners. My girlfriend finished, but quite a bit off her regular time. I jumped in and ran the last 6 miles with her. The heat and wind were really tough. Man, running like that with thousands of people screaming at the top of their lungs was quite an experience though. Makes me want to try and qualify to run it for real!
