View Full Version : Knees In Trouble?

A few years ago I sustained a very bad infection in my left leg from hitting it repeatedly on hurdles in Gym Class (I was the fat kid that could never get over them).

I had been having trouble with my leg prior but it wasn't until I went in for this and had scans of all sorts done on my leg were they able to diagnose what was wrong. Prior to this, and even now, my left knee makes an odd crunching noise every time I go up stairs, and I think my right is starting to do it.

The explanation they gave me was that the cartilage that lines the inner side of the knee cap was slightly detaching from the bone, the crunch noise, and occasional locking up and cracking of the joint is the loose cartilage hooking onto another part of the joint.

It can be fixed with minor surgery, but I've put it off since it really doesn't affect me too badly day-to-day, nor does it hold be back from anything.

With the sounds now coming from my right knee I am wondering if there is anything out there that adds support to knees to lessen the chance of joint injury or pain when doing things like squats, deadlifts, legpress and even cardio?

Thanks,

Colin

I have had a similar crunching sensation in my lower back for 6 years..

My Doctor just says "Ignore it if it doesn't hurt,so I have.."

I do all the exercises you mentioned, but not real heavy...no powerlifting future for either of us..in all liklihood..

Strengthening the muscles that support the knees should be a plus..

There could be people on here that know more about it,and may comment..but, I just go about my workout and it crunches..
and does not appear to be getting any worse..:D

I do pre/post workout stretching..side bends really get it going..

Oh yeah, my doctor did advise against twisting like motions..keep the trunk straight..I don't know if that would apply in your case...

Hey thanks for the input. Yeah my crunching doesn't necessarily hurt, it just happens constantly, I don't even really notice it any more. They gave me the same sort of "if it doesn't hurt, don't worry" think, but stressed SOME DAY I might want to fix it.

I guess for me it'll come down to not twisting the joint around a lot or especially hyper extending. I don't usually attempt weight that I am sure I can't do, I have a heart disorder and a pacemaker so I know my limits and try and stay with them until I feel I have to move up.

It'll be the same for these I guess.
