Hey, all.

I'm a young, healthy male. I'm 19, and I am extremely active (I run between 65 and 75 miles per week). My diet is rather strict and is sufficient for my needs while not being excessive. I get all of my vitamins and try not to get any in excess.

Occasionally (I'm thinking maybe once or twice a month) when I urinate I feel a very uncomfortable pressure in my penis. When I do feel this pressure, I just contract my muscles and wait for the feeling to pass before continuing to urinate. I'm hoping it's not a kidney stone, and I doubt it since I drink a minimum of 128 oz of water daily. It's not very painful, but it feels as though it could be painful... it almost feels like a blockage to be. Currently my urine is of normal coloring and leaves my body with uniform speed/consistency.

I've been tested for STDs- negative.

I do plan to go to a physician, but I'm hoping for any ideas in the interim. Can anyone offer any suggestions regarding my problem?

addendum: this has happened maybe 10 times in 6 months.

I run between 65 and 75 miles per week).

I think that could be a problem for your knees. Can't you modify it to less miles by switching some to more intense intervals? I'm not a running coach, but that's a lot of miles.

If it was a kidney stone, you'd know it.

High-mileage runners can experience electrolyte imbalance from time to time..profuse sweating can change the fluid levels..and effect the muscle firing, contraction etc for the short term..you use a lot of muscles when you pee and sometimes hold urine during the run..Your description of the "pressure" could be a minor muscle spasm..those are also associated with the imbalance..You pause,it subsides, and you continue the pee..

Your Doctor will likely order a serious blood screen..I am looking at a report of mine..sodium, calcium, potassium are key electrolyte chemicals..and there may be others..I'm not a Doctor..there are 32 blood chemistry values on this report..

Your symptom is transient and not very persistent,so for now, I would boost the water-soluble vitamins, drink a lot before, during, and after the run,and eat half a banana every day..128 ozs of water is not that much for your level of running..

P.S. Elite athletes should have more frequent blood screens than the average person anyhow..values can change more rapidly due to the insane amount of stress you put on yourself..Ha! With the heavy lifting and running you do, Zen could be right about potential knee problems in the future..
