"FRIDAY, June 29 (HealthDay News) -- Cheers to your health: Moderate drinkers are more likely to report above average health, compared with lifetime abstainers, light drinkers and heavy drinkers, researchers say."

That merely proves that alcohol impairs people's judgment and self-perception.

If you can keep control then it is certainly useful but drinkers seldom keep control. That's the problem. Everything that is done with a balance is good but one needs to have good sense of when the balance is not kept and when to stop.

Next we'll see this:

I don't know, it's not really a study more like a poll. Polls never completely lack a certain truth. If someone asked me how I felt about my health, I'd say "fantastic". According to the criteria, I'm a moderate drinker.

Yep. While this "study" doesn't add much, there is a good amount of evidence that moderate drinking (particularly wine) has some health benefits but most doctors won't recommend that you start drinking if you don't drink already. Even though the majority of people won't have a problem those that abuse alcohol can ruin their lives and their health.

I don't get these types of comments. This article isn't promoting alcoholism and alcohol abuse. Nobody is saying you should take up drinking for health reasons, but research has shown positive benefits of drinking small amounts of certain alcoholic beverages like red wine.

Personally, I think the reason this study/poll came out the way it did is because the amount of alcohol that the moderate drinkers consumed was enough to allow them to enjoy it and to relieve stress, but not enough to cause health problems. As a result, they felt better psychologically. Like with most things (heroin not included betastas ), a little alcohol in moderation isn't going to be a real problem.

It's also not a worthless study. The purpose wasn't to see how alcohol physically affected these people's health; the purpose was to see how healthy people FELT who drank at different levels, which is an entirely different question. I do agree that the headline of the article could be a little misleading, and whoever titled it probably didn't read it that carefully, and did make it sound a little like the study proved actual tangible health benefits of drinking, which obviously, it didn't.

Well there's been a tremendous amount of research into the affects of alcohol on health. It is pretty much an accepted fact that moderate alcohol consumption is beneficial for cardiac health. It's never actually promoted though for obvious reasons. Red wine is the best but other booze is okay as well.

The problem with these studies is putting people's habits into categories. Drinking 3 bottles of wine a day, one during each meal, may be okay whereas binging on two bottles in a couple of hours definitely is not.

Booze is wasted calories anyways, except for partaying :) And I do recall, although faintly, how a small amount of alcohol somehow negatively affects fat metabolism.

Once it's in the bloodstream, all other systems stop what they're doing (i.e., burning fat via your caloric deficit) and work on evaporating the alcohol until it's all gone, which takes a while. That's not very scientific language, but I'm fairly certain that's the idea. So I guess a case could be made for consuming a moderate amount of alcohol in one sitting vs. multiple, spread out light consumption, at least from a fat burning perspective. But, I still don't see it as a big deal, just do a little extra cardio and get back to being clean as a whistle.

I think Tom Venuto said it best when he said:

Anything beyond two drinks can do absolutely nothing positive for you. Maybe on a rare celebration occasion you might have more than two drinks, but I can't think of a single reason why any self-respecting human being who is serious about their health and fitness goals would ever binge drink or get drunk on a regular basis. Getting drunk is not an option on this program. If you get drunk, you’re not following the program. If you drink in large quantities ANY TIME for ANY REASON, just look in the mirror and admit the truth to yourself; "I 'm just not THAT serious about getting in shape. It’s not that high of a priority right now. I don't really want it THAT bad." At least then you're honest with yourself. If you enjoy social drinking in moderation, by all means go ahead and do it. But if you drink heavily, at least admit the truth to yourself.
