View Full Version : How many push-ups can you do?
Wherebob Mon, June 25th, 2007, 07:59 PM Had a friend tell me drop and give me 50. I'm thinkin no prob there. So I thought while I'm at it lets just see how many I can do without stopping.
Well I was very disappointed in myself, I could only rack up 56
I figured for sure I could do more than that for the shape I'm in. Guess I'm getting old.......
How many can you guys do?
Buster Mon, June 25th, 2007, 08:26 PM Somewhere around 45-55. But I am very light.

Nothing to be ashamed of there. That is a pretty good number. I haven't tried doing max number of pushups in a long time, so I don't really know how many I can do....but I'd be happy if I hit 56.
I had a roommate once, that trained himself to do 300 pushups non-stop. I was very impressed to say the least.
chang Mon, June 25th, 2007, 11:43 PM If you do a really heavy set of bench press before you test yourself for pushups, they'll seem like a walk in the park. You'll probably be able to do more than normally.
mattback Tue, June 26th, 2007, 12:08 AM i can barely get 45. i'm weak :(
i want to be able to get 90 in two minutes.
Azure Tue, June 26th, 2007, 12:24 AM I can hit 80 on a good day...at once....did 100 once.
Pretty amazing considering I've been doing them at 230-240 lbs. If I keep up with the pushups and get my body weight down to 200-210...I'll probably stick 30 more on to my total.

That doesn't mean you are weak. Pushups are more a test of muscular endurance than of muscular strength. I know guys that can bench 350+ yet can barely manage 50 pushups. My old roommate (who could do 300 pushups without a break) could only bench around 250-275ish.
user786 Tue, June 26th, 2007, 05:50 AM 40 -50 maximum on a good day....im happy as i couldnt even do one at the start of the year!!!

Why is that?
virtualadrian Wed, June 27th, 2007, 12:35 AM I am up to 50 now, when I started I could only squeeze out 32! I hope to get to like 60 or 70 non stop at some point :)
56 is actually really good! :tu:
betastas Wed, June 27th, 2007, 08:56 AM Exactly 10. No more, no less.
Then I go bench.

i want to be able to get 90 in two minutes. No, its the lack of oxygen & cardio endurance in your body that limits you to 45, not your strengh.
dont forget that when you do pushups, you work your entire body wether you think you do or not to get up and back down again, not just your upper body like in weight training excersizes and so fourth.
I use to do up to 80-100 at least 3 times a week with ease when i was thai boxing and back then i could barely fininsh a 10 rep routine with an 8kg bar when it came to lifting weights.
Now its the other way round, i can lift 3 times that weight & barely finish 10 pushups

I'd like to think i have a halfway decent amount of cardio endurance with the rowing, running, sprinting, and HIT cardio and weight training that i do... at least, it's better than a good portion of my friends who can all do more pushups than me.
virtualadrian Fri, June 29th, 2007, 11:43 AM I was going to post this to clarify, but the way that I got from just 32 pushups to 50 is by doing them prior to my upper body workout.
So, if I had an upper body day my warmup was pushups till failure, pullups till failure ( unless the routine asks for either ). So like 3 days of the week I was working on pushpus / pullup capacity :) But again... 56 or whatnot ain't bad!! More than what I can do :D

I only got to that many because i did cardio and nothing but cardio only back then when i could do that many pushups.
Sanguinity Thu, July 5th, 2007, 02:18 PM Push-ups are like any other exercise. If you practice you get good at them. Five years ago I could do about 100. I did them rapidly with consistent form but not touching my nose to the floor but going to parallel (upper arms and floor). After not doing push-ups for three years I tested myself and did only 30 probably could have sqeaked out 40-45 but would have hurt myself. Now six weeks later I am doing 40-50 three days a week and have done as many as 75 two weeks ago.
Practice is what push-ups are all about. btw I am 55 and hope to lift in the PanAm Masters next week.If my back heals. :tu:
jgroover Thu, July 5th, 2007, 03:34 PM I can push out 100 straight.. but thats after a warm up set of about 15 or 20. They are the best i can do right now because i play hardball twice a week plus 2 softball games a week and my shoulder can't take the heavy weight in doing a bench press.
It definately works chest/shoulders/back/ and get your core in there if you put your feet up on a ball...
Doubleoqueso Tue, July 17th, 2007, 09:51 PM Woo! Just banged out 50. It's easy up to 35, then my arms are all "oh, heck no you don't." Doing those just now helped me discover which muscle groups I need to start targeting! Nifty.

Hmm... wonder if i can pump out 100... or 75... I may have to try saturday....
Naturegirl Mon, July 23rd, 2007, 12:08 AM I can crank out 30 in a row, and about 25 more after that. Then I'm spent. I do them military-style, the kind they require males to do. I'm only 5 feet tall though and I think my shorter limbs help.
I thought some exercises like pushups were all about endurance, but one of the best things I did to help me get stronger was lift heavier weights, in the 5 rep range, and also focusing on strengthening my back. I put books in my backpack and do pushups with that on. It helped tremendously :tu:
Jedi Mon, July 23rd, 2007, 02:13 PM that is pretty cool NG i can only do around 25 but its not an exercise i regularly do.
What is yor rep range right now?
Naturegirl Mon, July 23rd, 2007, 09:54 PM Thanks Jedi,
You do 25? That's great! :)
Yeah my reps are right around 5-6 and I do 3-4 sets.
I need to go buy more weights though because I'm having trouble making weight adjustments that work well.
Allan Wed, July 25th, 2007, 11:13 PM I can get 67 non-stop, and I just tried to see how many I could get in 2 minutes, I got 94. Im proud of this, because 4 months ago I could only get 43 without stopping.
mepopo Thu, July 26th, 2007, 02:43 AM about 3 weeks ago I did exactly 60, I may have been able to do a few more but I wanted to keep it at an even number. Right now I can probably only do 50 since I killed my body around my birthday and haven't worked out since.
