View Full Version : Stinky clothes? programmed2live June 22nd, 2007, 11:15 AM xx droopy172 June 22nd, 2007, 11:33 AM Sweat smells bad and has a trace of urea in it so nothing you can do about that. Do you drink a lot of water throughout the day? I noticed my sweat is more watery rather than sticky when i'm well hydrated. Also, are you a hairy person I noticed the spots where i'm hairy tend to smell more then the rest same goes for people at the gym the hairy guys let off an awful odor kinda like armpit smell deoderant solves that. Try that for a little while drink more water, maybe throw in some green tea, and use an antiperspirant and see if any of it helps. I know what you mean though when I come back from the gym it looks like I took a shower from all the sweat but I haven't had any complaints about any odor from my friends or girls i'm around. zenpharaohs June 22nd, 2007, 11:41 AM Does anyone else have this problem and/or a solution? Don't use natural fiber clothes so much, especially cotton which absorbs all sorts of stuff. Switch to the thin and light plastic-based (polyester, etc.) running stuff which is also treated with antimicrobials. Then after you work out, spray the clothes with Febreeze (which is basically alcohol), and wash without special attention. If you stick with highly absorbent stuff like cotton, I would think you would soak it in alcohol after you use it. The whole point of why you can get away with the Febreeze spray with the plastic clothes is that they don't absorb stuff so the little bastards can't get in deep, and there isn't that much for them to live on on the surface. andysutils June 22nd, 2007, 04:53 PM SAfter about 3-5 outings to the gym I'll wash the clothes in the hamper. Thoughts? umm, are you telling me you dont wash your clothes after every workout? you just spray them? & wash em at a later time? cc June 22nd, 2007, 05:17 PM Definitely avoid cotton. Go for polyester fabrics that wick sweat away.. you'll feel cooler during the workout and there won't be quite as much liquid saturated in them afterwards. NordicTrack (usually available at Sears) makes some great affordable stuff, but if you've got some extra money to spare, you can't beat Underarmour in my opinion. Shamie June 22nd, 2007, 05:33 PM I have the exact same problem, except that I workout in the morning, and my gym clothes sit in the trunk of my car baking until I get home from work (so my car stinks also). I agree, no cotton. I would suggest that you don't wash your workout clothes with your normal clothes, otherwise they will smell too. Try throwing in those Bounce fabric softner sheets in the dryer, they seem to help. But if you find a solution, let me know. geauxLSU June 22nd, 2007, 06:29 PM use fabric softner geobuilder June 24th, 2007, 03:32 AM use vinegar and wash with hot water:spaz: andysutils June 24th, 2007, 11:55 AM use vinegar and wash with hot water:spaz:ah yeh good idea, vinegar should worlk, i use vinegar to evaporate the smell from my microwave after ive cooked fish, works a treat, cant see why it wouldnt work on clothes, unless itd leave them smelling of vinegar but heh, vinegars better than sweat right:tu: TestType June 25th, 2007, 12:10 PM Just be extra careful with washing polyester and other plastic material clothing.. If you leave it in the washing machine for too long after it's done and it isn't hung up to dry properly they can develop a really bad smell that you can't ever wash out. You might not notice it immediately but whenever the fabric gets wet again (i.e. after washing or when it comes into contact with sweat or a wet towel in the gym bag) this awful sour stench will become inescapable. The worst thing is, if you then continue to wash it with other clothes they will also start to smell like it, be they polyester or not. So if this seems familiar to anyone, get that piece of clothing and throw it! Cramp11 July 2nd, 2007, 11:20 AM I have a basket in the basement for gym clothes and hockey stuff. I typically wash them once a week. Some are cotton, some are that weird 'wisk away sweat' material. For me I find that doing a prewash makes the difference. If you machine doesn't have a prewash just do a rinse cycle and throw some soap in. When I didn't do this, I would notice a stench sometimes when I was done. I really noticed this when I would wash camping clothes. Campfire smell is really hard to get rid of. I find the prewash made all the difference. After that, run the machine as you would normally. I always add vinegar to the bleach compartment. Due to eczema issues, I always do a second rinse. My wife just laughed at me. "You're on a fitness site giving laundry tips? " :o ThatIsRazonable July 4th, 2007, 11:59 PM Situations like this make me glad I have a home gym. |
