Hey all, Im trying to lose a fair amount of weight, and I am told that protien/whey shakes are a good thing.

I have no clue what either are really, and what they do, so im kinda just looking for explanations, etc.

which do you prefer, and what brand/flavor, etc.

and next is cost?

Also what kind of vitamins/supplements should I be taking?

im 20yr old, just under 6 feet, and 240lb.

my diet is messed up and I know it, I work either 8-5, or 9-6, or 10-7 so my breaks are never the same. However I could have a shake with me. I also drink lots of water.

im currently doint weight training monday/wed/friday, and some saturday for about an hour each. and cardio tues, thurs, and sunday.

Im limited to wieghts/bench, treadmill, and recumbant bike.

Hi!

Protein and whey shakes are just that - protein. They are as much of a good thing as chicken breast, steak, or any other meat source. If you are eating too many calories, taking a shake will only add calories and you'll still gain weight. On the other hand, if you're consuming the right amount of calories to shed fat, the shakes aren't going to cause you to lose fat any faster. They are simply calories. The idea of a shake is as a supplement. If you believe you are not getting enough protein and are having trouble getting it from whole foods, then a shake is a great way to add to that total. Most people do fine getting all of their protein from whole foods. I personally like to have the occasional shake simply because certain shakes taste great and make for healthy "treats".

The brand/flavor is going to be highly individual. I personally have been trying out various shakes for the last decade and still haven't found anything that comes close to the flavor of Beverly International Ultra Size and/or Muscle Provider. However, I also haven't tried some of the newer shakes and have heard good things about the shakes provided by the sponsors on this site (you can click the banners up top to learn more).

Since you're "diet is messed up" I'd skip on the shake for now. It's not going to fix your diet. You need to get your nutrition in order first, and then decide if shakes fit into it.

As for a vitamin, a quality, pharmaceutical grade multivitamin will do the trick. Do a search on multivitamin as this has been discussed many, many, many times here.

Best of health and success,
