Are there any good oatmeal cookies (nutritionwise) in the market, like with whole wheat flour and maybe sugar-free? I saw sugarfree ones in the local grocery but they had enriched wheat flour.

Why not make your own? It's not that hard, or at least that's what my girlfriend says when she makes them. :)

It's hard to find good products in the store that don't have a whole lot of preservatives in them. Sugar free products are reduced calorie, but I don't like using a lot of chemicals, so usually I combine a small amount of artificial sweetener with something that's naturally sweet (fruit). We noticed sugar free pudding cups at the grocery store, but the person sampling them said that they need to be kept refrigerated because the sugar acts as a preservative in those shelf stable ones.

(Warning: my kids won't eat these, but I think they're fantastic.)

Applesauce Oatmeal Cookies
3 c. oatmeal
1 c. whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking. soda
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. unsweetened applesauce
2/3 C Splenda (Note: original recipe called for 1 C sugar, but I like it like this)
1 t. vanilla
2/3 c. raisins
Combine the first four ingredients. Mix up the next 3 ingredients and add them to the dry ingredients. Stir in the raisins. Roll in small balls and smash to 1/4 " thickness on the cookie sheet. Bake at 275 degrees for 22-25 minutes.

Makes about 50 cookies with only 0.3 grams of fat each.

They're also extra tasty with some ground flax seeds, sunflower seeds, or other nuts added. :eat:

I like Guava's idea a lot but I don't know if I would like the applesauce in it or not (BTW thank you Guava, I am going to pass that recipe along to my girlfriend, she'll probably really like it).

I can't remember how my girlfriend makes them but I'll ask her. I do know how to make good protein pancakes though which you can add oats to. :) (Let me know if you're interested or just search the forums; I may have posted the recipe.)

EDIT: Actually I just ran across a recipe for cookies that uses the same protein powder I use for pancakes! :) Here it is (have not tried this though):

The next time you cook up a batch and your kids don't eat it, I can PM you a mailing address that will guarantee their consumption:drool:

Hey guys,
Just an update. I found what I was looking for and posting here for your info (if any of you need em too).

Basically I found 2 such oatmeal raisin cookies.

1. Kashi all natural whole grain: They have whole wheat flour and some other whole grains, oats and also FLAX SEEDS (for your omega 3). The downside is each cookie also has some sugar (8 gm) which I think is pretty reasonable looking at the size of the cookie.

2. South West Diet oatmeal raisin cookies: They are whole wheat flour and low sugar (4gm) with 6 gm of sugar alcohols. I think sugar alcohols are not digested by the body so you should be okay but they might cause stomach problems in some people.

I bought the Kashi ones...they give you different whole grains and flax seeds. The sugar is not that high and it shouldnt raise your glucose levels very high since you are taking it with lots of low GI carbs like whole grains and oats in the cookie. THEY TASTE PRETTY GOOD! Maybe ill try the others next time.

Oh yeah, just in case, I saw em both in super target in the aisle with cereals.

yeah, ill appreciate the link to your recipe. As for splenda you are right. I dont know, I tend not to take a lot of these artificial sweeteners. The only splenda I take is the one in arizona diet green tea (its sweetened with splenda). I take optimum natural whey which has no sweeteners. I mean as of now they seem to be pretty safe, but there has been no long term research and you never know. With all the beverage and diet industry ull always see biased research. So yeah, I would avoid using the artificial sweeteners in your day to day diet. I dont even have any in my kitchen. I think taking them sometime should be okay but I would definitely avoid excessive use (like the one in that recipe)
