Does protein powder cause diarrhea?

To be specific, I had some yesterday around 2pm, then got the shits at work around 6:30. I took 50g of a Whey Con/Iso mix with cold water.

*Please don't giggle*

I ussually do like a scoop of whey and a scoop of casein at about 3pm as a meal in water, that adds up to 42 grams. At 5:30 I take some Pro-NOS Whey Isolate, another 42 grams, 2 scoops in fat free milk 10oz. So I am looking at 90g of protein and pissload of powder. Never got the shitzors tho. Are you taking like CLA's or some other kind of supplement?

I've had CLA's give me some dynamite shiznits !!! Had to apologize to the porcelain Gods after ... LOL. Ahem...

The first time I used whey+dex I got the shits chronic  After that I got some bad cramps from a bad quality brand, but since switching to Nitrean I've been crapping like a carthorse.

When you say crapping, is this the solid kind or the wet runny kind Gaz? Sorry to get so [enter word here]

I've never had diarreah from any supplements. Are you sure it's diarreah? Just because your poop is runny doesn't mean you have diarreah. If you have diarreah ANYTHING you eat or drink will literally go right through your intestines so fast, and come right out almost immediately after you eat it.

I mean that once I stopped using a bad quality whey, my movements returned to normal.

There was a 4 hour delay. So what else could it be then?

It could be that you're lactose intolerant and are reacting to the lactose in the supplement but I doubt it because:

A: The lactose amount in a serving of that powder has to be trace/minimal with only 3.9g of carbs per serving.

B: 4 hours is a long time for that to happen. If you were intolerant, it'd likely start hitting you within 30 minutes.

The powder does proclaim added digestive enzymes. Those would normally have the opposite effect but can sometimes wind up eating your natural enzymes and causing diarrhea.

I don't think it's the protein powder, though. Are you eating more fiber? Oats? Raw oats? Lots of broccoli/lettuce/other roughage? Many people don't get enough fiber and their digestive systems aren't robust enough to handle a sudden increase. Changing your fiber intake from 1.5-2 X what you were previously used to could definetly cause diarrhea since your intestinal walls aren't as bacteria-rich as they need to be to break down that material sufficiently. If this is the case then there's good news and bad news: Good -- you'll build up the ability to digest that material in a few weeks. Bad -- you'll cramp and run a few hours after eating high-fiber foods 'til then.

One way to alleviate the symptoms, if it's a fiber issue, is to thoroughly cook the fibrous foods before eating. You can gradually transition back to undercooked/raw as your body gets used to the fiber surge.

Beyond that, it could be another supplement altogether. I've gotten bad diarrhea from cheap multivitamins before. Anything else you may be taking?

Wow a serious side to M@, joking buddy. :)

Well I have been increasing my fibre intake. Yesterday I had 200g broccoli and 100g green beans, from very little previously. I am carb cycling, and havent had oats or brown rice since Sunday.

I am not lactose intolerant, as I have drank milk all my life with no problems, and I used to eat cottage cheese.

I cook all my meals, I do not eat raw fibre, the broccoli and beans are cooked thoroughly :)

First ive ever heard of that man, you see I personally think thats its the brand your using, perhaps the quality of protein isnt as great as some other brands such as Reflex,EAS & muslcetech.

Do you have stomach cramps or anything, or anything with bad related to your immune system?

I really do say change your brand and perhaps even a nicer flavour if you use chocolate.

This is serious business. *

Well I have been increasing my fibre intake. Yesterday I had 200g broccoli and 100g green beans, from very little previously.

Even a jump as innocuous as 5g - 10g of fiber is doubling your intake so that could very well be it. Easy enough to spot-check: If the trouble persists, drop your fiber back down to normal levels for a day or two and see if it happens then.

* and John gets mad if my jackassery leaves my journal or the Wastland :D

Another thing it could be is the type of sweetener it uses. Aspartame and saccharin tend to give you the runs more so then sucralose does.

Hey man, I saw that you're from Reading. I was stuck there for work for like 3 weeks last year out in some awful hotel on Oxford Rd. The bars downtown were fun, though. Lots of fit birds (the ones that had their teeth). :)
