View Full Version : Suggestions to get through the day

I've just started a new job and I have never been so bored in my life. From what I can tell I have been brought in simply to fill one of the ITIL positions, to make the project look like it fully staffed and running within the framework. However there is no actual work for me to do, and I've created about as much as I can. So my days are currently dragging!

Todays activities have been; going through all the posts on here I've missed the past couple of months, worked out my menu and shopping list for the next few weeks and read wikipedia articles on John Rebus, Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, oh and spoke to a couple of agencies about potential jobs.

So until I get another job, are there any suggestions for how to make it through the day, stuck in an office in front of a PC?

No games on the PC, no rights to add anything outside of the corporate software library either :(

I have found one game I can play, how early can I leave the office. todays time is... now!

Find some more forums :D I'm in a similar situation and generally read between 3 and 5 forums the size of this one on any given day. Theres a limitless source of time killers on the internet, you just need to know where to find them.

Time to break out the good old library card and catch up on some reading. My job was like that, 10 plus hours per day but without the advantage of even the internet. The library card and netflix did me wonders. I also wrote a book that is almost 300 pages. I have read every book the library has on lifting, running, and especially Mount Everest my personal favorite. Also incorporate some staring into space and psychic experiments such as remote viewing and esp.

I kinda like that idea, but I recently came across a book that I checked out from the library in the loft... it would appear that I forgot to take it back 11 years ago :o Not sure I'll be welcome there :D

They'll probably take you back with a little fee or something. Or maybe nothing. You may not even be in the database after all this time.

That said, here you go: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

AIM, YIM keep me entertained all day. Nothing like chatting it up with your friends all day on the computer to pass the time.

If you can't dowload stuff at work like AOL ect. ect. try a website called www.meebo.com it allows you to log into your IM accounts without having to download anything. You don't even have to register on the site.

Newgrounds.com has people who submit their flash movies and games from all over the world. Ebaumsworld.com, oh and youtube has like every show you can possibly imagine. Yahoo games is another one since most just use java applets you don't need to install anything unless you don't have java runtime installed. Then there's tons of TV websites that stream movies and such.

And me too. Although due to arcane rules, I have to telnet out of the corporate LAN (ssh out not allowed!) to a colocated server, where I have a copy of centericq running.

The only other issue I have is that all my friends seem busy working and not available for a chat, maybe I need to make some unemployed friends

I dream of the day I'll be allowed to watch youtube from work again, or play java games :dreamy:
