So here's a simple question with perhaps a not so simple answer:

If I lift twice a week, will I reach a point beyond which the only way to get bigger is to lift more often, or instead will it simply take me more time to get bigger?

I get to the gym four times a week, two of which are cardio. Probably will bump that up to four times lifting once I am done cutting fat.

What do you all think? How critical is frequency of lifting?

I personally think you should prioritize lifting over cardio even in your fat loss phases. To answer the intial question, lifting more often doesn't necessarily make you get any bigger. As long as your consistent and progressive, you'll make gains.

And make sure your nutrition is on point, because you could lift for hours and won't make any progress without a good diet

How big can you get? As big as you want.

The only caveat is your determination and perseverance.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

It sounds to me then like frequency isn't going to determine how big you can get, just how fast you can get there... right?

It's all about:

1) Nutrition
2) Stimulation
3) Avoiding over-training
4) Genetics

Nutrition is the biggest key, as many fall short in that area concentrating only on "going to the gym" and beating themselves up like mad, thus over-training and making no progress and even going backwards. A huge fact people overlook is that you grow OUTSIDE of the gym, not in it. I personally never stay in the gym over 1 hour, and I make sure that my nutrition is on point all the time. Then again, this is my career, so it's 2nd nature to me.

Above all, CONSISTENCY needs to be applied to the above as well, as w/out continual effort towards a goal, success will be hard to come by.
