View Full Version : Unwanted Body Hair...what to do?
dc2985 May 24th, 2007, 03:21 PM I have a reasonably hairy chest and was wondering if anybody had any hair removal tips. I have tried waxing before however it just hurt really bad and didn't get much of the hair at all. Shaving is the easiest but the ingrown hairs and then just having to do it every few days is annoying. Any tips would be great appreciated.
Doubleoqueso May 24th, 2007, 03:48 PM Lazer hair removal.

 Sorry! I watched "the 40 Year Old Virgin" last night and this just reminded me of the scene where Steve Carrell gets waxed.
This was kinda discussed in the Off Topic area:

Lael_TG broke down the options pretty well:
...For a normal, healthy guy, ALL hair removal is pretty much temporary, with grow back time from shortest to longest being:
Shaving (Days)
Waxing (Weeks)
Laser (~6-9 Months)
Electrolysis (About a year)
Only repeated electrolysis sessions have been proven to permanently remove hair follicles.

Hope this helps!
doubleplus May 24th, 2007, 04:36 PM I'm not looking forward to having to pay for hair removal either... and I have shoulder, back, and belly to worry about, as well as chest. Actually I might go 70's and leave the chest hair.

Veet (or Nair) are the best, imho. Cheap, easy, and painless. Hardly any ingrown hairs.
mattsesar May 24th, 2007, 05:19 PM I've got a fairly hairy chest myself (certainly not like Steve Carrell or anything) but it doesn't really bother me. I mean I guess if you want a clean chest for competition or something, sure, I can see the necessity for that, but for purely aesthetic purposes? Not worth the money/pain, imo.
Besides, some ladies go crazy for a guy with hair on his chest. Any girl who wouldn't like you because of it isn't worth your time anyway. :p
truthless May 24th, 2007, 08:40 PM I've got the opposite problem of you. I have very little chest hair and what I do have is mainly scraggly little hairs in the center of my chest and a thick ring of hair around my nipples. Yes, it's as disgusting as it sounds. I simply shave my chest any time I am going be without my shirt (which isn't very often since I'm still in the process of losing weight) or going to be naked with a girl. I tried Nair for men and it was a little too strong for my skin. I got a red rash on my chest that kind of broke out into sores and I got the same amount of ingrown hairs that I do by shaving. If you decide to shave, use a little shaving cream and a fresh razor. If your hair is super wooly, like the guy in 40y/o virgin, I suggest using a regular hair buzzer with no guard on to thin it out first.
Queenie May 24th, 2007, 09:21 PM Can you try a nair/neet product designed for, erm, sensitive areas? Test a small patch first, the inside of your wrist is a good place to see if you'll react to it.
Talio May 25th, 2007, 04:22 AM Mine grows in a batman symbol, but I shave it off. Phillips body groomer. Look into it. It will be the best hair removal investment you make. Very few ingrown hairs especially once your chest gets used to it.
Rhez May 25th, 2007, 08:57 AM I tried the Veet hair removal cream once, never again for me, all i use now is the "Gillette Quattro" wet shaver, last me about a week before the little stubbly buggers start to grow again, only takes a couple of mins to shave while having a shower.
TeejWI May 25th, 2007, 10:29 AM And then there's those of us who have backs that make steve carrell's chest look barren...
banderbe May 25th, 2007, 11:44 AM From Seinfeld..
Jerry: So get this: we're in the park today Alex goes wild for this hairless dog.
George: So?
Jerry: So. I figure since she likes one hairless animal why not another.
George: Oh really. You tell her you shaved it?
Jerry: Are you nuts? I don't want her to think I'm one of those low-rise briefs guys who shaves his chest.
Rise May 25th, 2007, 12:46 PM i think about doing it from time to time. but if i shave my chest, will i feel compelled to shave my arms & legs? i hate shaving my face to begin with (laziness), how will i add on the added work of all those other areas...

I have the same problem as you. I opt for the waxing method... Many thanks to my girlfriend who assists me in this matter :)
nomadsails May 25th, 2007, 02:51 PM I pretty hairy everywhere and here's what I've tried:
Nair - too painful, bad job (coarse hair is a pain in the butt)
Razor - consumes blades very quick, ingrown hairs, must be done daily, can lead to a hairless obsession (smooth upper body but furry legs just plain looks weird)
Clippers (beard/hair) - great job. shortest/2nd shortest setting work really well. allows you to be alot less hairy but not be obsessive about it. one a week is good enough. also fairly easy to do yourself. here's my recommendation.

This is what i do. I'm much to hairy, if I shaved one part of my body i would end up having to shave every single other part to not look wierd. So I just buzz it all down short, its so much easier.

These two are exactly right. Unless you can afford laser or electolysis treatments ($$$$$) I would go with the electric clippers. I wouldn't bother trying to shave it, because you'll go crazy trying to keep it smooth and stubble free. Just set the clippers to their shortest setting (#1 guard,) and have at it! No stubble, no ingrown hairs/razor burn. From a few feet away you'll look nearly hairless, and you'll feel pretty smooth, too (alot, smoother than a bunch of 48 hour stubble, anyway!) Plus it won't look weird next to your hairy arms and legs. Just my two cents. Good luck!
