Hello everyone,

Today was the begining of the program I am working at a real gym. I'll tell you, I am certainly feeling it right now. I have some questions though about what I expirenced at the gym.

One part of my routine is to do.. I believe the term is preacher curls. A compound exercise to work both biceps and forearm. The routine calls for 3 sets of 12. Well (I am not very strong). I used the 15 pound dumbbells, which were the smallest I saw, and by the time I got to rep 8 I was given out. My forearms burned so bad that I could not lift the dumbbell again, but my biceps were barly feeling it. So if I continue with this type of exercise will I lose some of the gains I could be making in my biceps?

All muscles involved in an exercise have to be strong enough to complete the exercise, so, even though your forearms may be limiting your preacher curls, it is okay because they will quickly catch up to your biceps since you are just starting out.

With that said, a burning feeling in the forearms is kind of strange for a preacher curl. Were you by chance curling your wrist forward the entire time? If you keep it straight, it should take some of the strain off of the forearm and put it back on the bicep.

I knew I should have looked it up before I posted.
I was incorrect on the exercise name. I was infact doing the Cross Body Hammer Curl.

That makes more sense because the semi-supination of the wrist puts a much greater emphasis on the muscles of the forearm. The same things still apply, however -- continue on and these muscles will catch up.
