My favorite example of this is the age of piracy. There's a direct correlation between the amount of law enforcement/punishment and the number of pirates that existed. If you were walking down an alley with your wallet full of $100 bills out in your hands, you might not be surprised if you got mugged. The web is no different. Right now there's not a lot of risk for criminals. They have plenty of techniques for circumventing the security precautions that are provided by both websites and browsers, and there's not a lot that police can do to catch criminals, who may be in another state or halfway around the world. -L rtestes May 18th, 2007, 05:50 PM If you were walking down an alley with your wallet full of $100 bills out in your hands, you might not be surprised if you got mugged. -L Off topic but not. Examples of growing up in the 50's in small town america. When I was 6 years old, 1st grade. When I got out of school about 4 blocks from down town and 6-7 blocks from my house. I could choose to walk home or go downtown where my parents had an optical shop, after school. Sometimes I would go to shop and tell them what movie I would like to see for 20 cents - show and popcorn. It could be a western, Frankenstein or a first run movie. If I walked home, me and other kids would play, we had to be back when parents came home. There were no school buses. We walked or if lucky a home mom picked you up. There were city buses but not many routes so we usually walked. No one was ever hurt or abused in our towns. By the time I was 8-9, we were in different city and school was about 3-4 miles and downtown was 5 miles. So we rode bikes to school or city bus. I can remember in summer, I rode on bike to town for movie with my parakeet on my shoulder, he would set there or on shoulder through out show. At home we could play in woods or outside till the street lights came on. No cell phones. many had no phones or cars. Parents didn't worry about you, crime was not even a thought, we never locked doors or cars. Parents took little or no part in school. About 60% of my high school class graduated from college. I was not aware of any one who failed. If anyone ever committed a crime, I sure never heard of it. I have stayed in touch with most from my class. Point: times are different in those same towns, I grew up in are crime ridden. But if we had the Internet in 1950's in USA, I am not sure if net crime would have existed at all. It certainly would not have been accepted. So there was a time where crime wasn't expected even in the alley I used to walk to town in as 6 years old. |
