View Full Version : what about sport drinks DollyDagger Mon, May 14th, 2007, 01:42 AM like gatorade or powerade? should you drink them? particularly for weight loss? daciz2 Mon, May 14th, 2007, 01:59 AM If you're cutting I think it'd be better to drink water as there is alot of dextrose in them. which is pretty much the same thing as sugar. mattback Mon, May 14th, 2007, 02:26 AM There is a specific type of gatorade called Gatorade high endurance formula. this formula has better ingredients and more sodium then the regular gatorade. i believe the ingredients are closer to the powdered gatorade. i use powdered gatorade in my pre and post workout shakes, but i dont touch sports drinks otherwise. i try to get about 20g carbohydrate before exercise and about 25g carbohydrate after from the gatorade powder. Determined Mon, May 14th, 2007, 11:39 AM Depending on what you eat before and after your workouts, you probably do not need any sports drinks at all. They are designed to provide quickly absorbed sugars and salts which your body may be drained of due to heavy exertion. Having a meal after your workout will replentish you in a better manner. These drinks were originally designed to fight fatigue and dehydration after 2 hours of football in 100 degree Florida swamp heat. The idea was that the players would have an advantage during the third hour. If you're concerned about weight loss, you should probably avoid these drinks. It's roughly the equivalent of dumping a couple of tablespoons of sugar and one of salt into your glass of water. Not really helping with your bottom line daily calories. If you really feel they are necessary, you can try diluting them with water to 1/2 of 1/4 strength. Just a suggestion, and that's probably all you will need for an hour's work in an air-conditioned gym.
