View Full Version : do you count calories from vegetables?
sublime_4_life April 16th, 2004, 11:00 AM hey guys i was just curious if you count the calories from vegetables you eat in a day. Currently i eat about 200 cals a day from vegetables (either green beans, broccolli, cauliflower and maybe peas) and ive been including it in my daily total of calories (2200)
Well recently ive seen some people that count vegetable calories and some that dont calling it "negetive foods" or whatever since your body uses more energy to burn them than what is actually in the vegetables itself. So do you guys count cals from veggies or no? Im just curious if im really eating a couple hundred calories less than i should be.
thanks for your help
ps- im cutting right now thats why im being kindof maticulus(sp?) about the exact amount of calories im consuming
JeremyLikness April 16th, 2004, 11:20 AM It's relative to your goals. A calorie is a calorie. When people talk of negative calories, you are still consuming calories, it is just that your metabolism is increasing as the result of digestion. So you could:
(a) assume your metabolism is x and then consume 200 calories worth of vegetables and not count them, or
(b) adjust your metabolism to x + 200 and then count the 200 calories
Does that make sense? I always count calories. Sure, vegetables raise your metabolism. So do healthy fats - some bodybuilders cut by INCREASING calories, i.e. adding flaxseed oil. Go figure. So are these negative calories? Or are they positive calories and the metabolism is increasing as a result?
This is why I love software like DietPower, because I simply log ALL foods and then if I am consuming a lot of foods that raise my metabolism, like vegetables, you'll see that reflected in the daily budget.

sublime_4_life April 16th, 2004, 09:53 PM thanks for the reply jeremy. Mainly i was posting this because i know that if you undereat you can cause a negative effect in weight loss (using muscle as well as fat for calories) and so at the beginning of the week i was 161lbs...as the week went on i stayed right about there, dipping to something like 160. Well friday rolled around and i went to a theme park so i was up walking around all day but i still managed to eat close to every 2.5 hours and i tried eating healthy as best i could (only 1 ice cream cone! lol) but when i weighed myself sat. morning i was down to like 157-158. Thats like 3-4lb loss over 5 days, definately not a good thing.
i really doubt it was water weight i lost mainly becuase i drink around 1-1.5 gals a day and yesterday was no different...i actually drank likely around 2 gallons. So i just didnt know if i was undereating all week and then it just showed up today or what?
anyways i looked into that dietpower program you were talking about and it seems awesome! im gonna start using that from now on (instead of fitday) and see how it works for me. Thanks for the input
taffer April 16th, 2004, 10:41 PM wow i had no idea vegies did so much for you! im now going to consider replacing my rice with a serving of brussel sprouts or peas! (i think brussel sprouts are better for you, and you can eat more, may look weird at school though :p)
imsuxok? April 17th, 2004, 03:56 AM I count calories from veggies, but I don't put much effort into doing so. With meat, fish, oil, nuts, etc., I carefully measure every gram or teaspoon. With veggies, and fruit to a lesser extent, I'm satisfied with approximating how much I've eaten.
Wildcat April 17th, 2004, 10:53 PM I too, count vegetables as calories. I need all the help I can in getting enough good calories in my diet. :eat:

I agree with you completely. According to Diet Power, cauliflower has 34 calories per cup and broccoli has 52 calories per cup. The calorie levels are so low that it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend much time carefully measuring them. Even if you're 100% off in your estimate, you haven't eaten many calories.
Some people like to track all of this with 100% precision, and that's fine for them. Personally, I won't track anything at all if it becomes too tedious.
metron9 April 18th, 2004, 10:07 AM I am not sure about this but as I remember it Boyer Coe I think was a vegetarian and from this picture it shure looks like vegetables have some pretty good calories in them.
