View Full Version : Natty PB vs ....say.....Jiffy
cgram23 April 15th, 2004, 04:02 PM I just bought my first jar of Smuckers Natty PB, and I gotta say....it sucks. It's completely bland, and has a wierd texture. Is the only real difference between natural and regular (like Jiffy) sugar? Jiffy has 3grams, while natural has none. Is 3grams really that big a deal? It may be....I'm still learning this stuff :d_biggrin
opela77 April 15th, 2004, 04:16 PM I would say the Trans Fatty Acids would be the biggest difference...
I actually like Smuckers natural better than the other stuff. Did you make sure and stir it up really well before putting it in the fridge? That makes a huge difference. I empty the jar into a bowl and mix it then put it back in the jar, and the oil separation is barely noticeable.
djerickd April 15th, 2004, 04:48 PM I did a taste test with Smuckers and this other brand both natural, and the other brand tasted better than the Smuckers. I'll post what brand it was when I get home...
EDIT: The brand that tasted better was Arrowhead Mills
Mahdimael April 15th, 2004, 05:06 PM As pointed out in an earlier thread, there is a miniscule amount of trans fatty acids in non-natural peanut butter. So really, the only difference is salt content and taste
sterno April 15th, 2004, 05:13 PM As a long time "Skippy" guy, I thought the same thing when I tried the natural. Just stick it out until you go through the jar. By the time I finished the jar I was hooked and thought it tasted pretty good (I'm not sure if I'd say better). Good enough that I didn't feel the need to switch back. At first I needed to use a little more of the natural PB than I would've with the Skippy but now I use the same portion sizes as I did before. I agree with opela77 as you should make sure you stir it really good, otherwise it'll get pretty dry as you get to the bottom.

Luke.S April 15th, 2004, 05:26 PM A nother difrence in natty penut butter would be the absence of palmoil.
taffer April 15th, 2004, 05:28 PM try and get some almond butter, it tastes soooooooo good
if you dont like that, there is always cashew and hazelnut butter :)
Luke.S April 15th, 2004, 07:16 PM I rather like the sound of Almond Butter, is it as good as peanut?.
taffer April 15th, 2004, 08:24 PM i reckon it tastes like 500 times better, also the nutritional info is better than peanuts!
ibrewale April 15th, 2004, 09:33 PM Off Topic a bit:
I think I'll stick with non - natural peanut butter JUST BECAUSE it WILL NOT be called "natty"...that drives me up a wall...
That "natty" crap (the word "natty" - not natural peanut butter) may be the only pet peeve I really am anal about.

LOL! Well, I actually think it's sort of a cute name for it.
But back to the thread's topic, no I don't personally think 3g of sugar makes that big of a difference. On the other hand, if you have a hard time controlling yourself with peanut butter, only keeping a yucky brand in your house could keep you from going nuts (hohoho...good one ;) )
One time, I was REALLY naughty. I woke up in the middle of the night and had a "snack" which consisted of two large bananas which I dipped (yes, DIPPED) in the "natty" pb and ate them mouthful after mouthful. In the morning I realized what I had done and saw that the jar was missing about 1/2C of PB. That's like 900 calories! So no matter how healthy your peanut butter is, you can still do some major damage if you don't control your portion size :spaz:
karatetricker April 15th, 2004, 10:28 PM I have stopped buying Natural Peanut Butter simply because I became so addicted, I'd end up eating 2-4 servings each day and it was killing my diet.
Yes, the stuff is THAT good!

heh. first time I saw it I thought "well-dressed peanut butter? oooo-kay." yeah, it's annoying, but not as bad as people who write in SMS-ese.
imsuxok? April 16th, 2004, 05:03 AM I rather like the sound of Almond Butter, is it as good as peanut?.
I think it tastes just as good, if not better.
F1Champ April 16th, 2004, 10:54 AM the roasted almond butter tastes way better than PB in my opinion. Put it in your mouth and let it melt, your in heaven. Almond+caschew butter is amazing also!!!!! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
bunman April 16th, 2004, 12:06 PM I know what you mean about the nasty texture/taste of Smuckers Natural.
But I do think that they hydrogenate the fats in non-natural peanut butter so you end up getting saturated fats. It defeats the whole point of eating peanut butter for most of us.
The GOOD natural peanut butter is not next to the regular peanut butter. It comes in plastic containers with snap-on lids and can be found in a refrigerated aisle of the super market (at my local supermarket, it's next to the egg beaters, pilsbury muffin tubes, and bagels). This stuff is usually locally produced so I don't know if there is a national brand (maybe REAL?). But the texture and taste are really good. I like the one with honey added.

Wrong. There is 1 to 2 percent hydrogenated oil added to regular peanut butter. There is no trans fat in regular peanut butter according to the USDA's testing.

Almond+caschew butter is amazing also!!!!! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm That's a good point. The mouth feel is something people often overlook when comparing natural nut butters with processed ones. The melt in the mouth feeling you get with a natural nut butter is really quite satisfying.

I use Adams. If you are doing Natty, the Smuckly is nothing compared to the Adams. Adams is amazing Natty...hehe
efk April 16th, 2004, 10:25 PM I like the chunky, I didn't notice any taste differnect with the chunky - but mixing it is tough.
fujo April 17th, 2004, 02:58 AM Do any of you grind your own?? A store here has a peanut grinder to make your own peanutbutter. I'll also tell you a very tasty way to eat the smuckers - sprinkle just a bit of cinnamon on top. When I first started eating the natural stuff it was very odd because it isn't sweetened. Now I love it -- I tried some sweetened the other day and wow it was just way too sweet for me.
Bunko April 19th, 2004, 08:48 AM I just got some Trader Joe's Creamy Almond Butter. It tastes really good! I can highly recommend it.

Mahdimael April 19th, 2004, 02:54 PM I really want to try it. Trader Joe's here I come.
vortex72 April 19th, 2004, 04:48 PM Maranatha has been the best NATTY peanut butter I've tasted.
It is usually found in the health food aisle and is pretty expensive. I used to get 2 huge bottles at Costco for 6bucks but they stopped carrying it. I've since switched over to Kroger's(grocery store) brand. It is only like 1.69/bottle and it tastes great.
