View Full Version : Begginer Question about Handling Out of Town Conference (nutrition and workouts)
DashZ April 17th, 2007, 10:52 AM Next week I’ll be traveling out of town to a conference in San Antonio, TX until Friday. I’m working on a fitness and nutrition plan of attack and wanted some feedback and suggestions from others who have also been in this situation.
First, I really enjoy my running. I’ve mapped out a 2.5 mile route through the streets of downtown San Antonio. I’ll check with the hotel staff to make sure this is safe. But if that doesn’t work, I’ll be using the treadmill in the fitness center of the hotel.
Second, I’d like to keep up somewhat with my strength training I’ve just started. From the few pictures of the hotel fitness center, it looks like I should be able to do this. I’ll just have to figure what I can do on their equipment.
Nutrition: Here’s the challenge. I’ll be eating out all the time. Here are my thoughts on my plan:
Meal #1: During the conference they will have a “breakfast”. I just know what will be on the menu: donuts. I don’t want donuts. My plan is to eat eggs and oatmeal in the hotel restaurant if it’s available. Any other suggestions?
Meal #2: This will probably be fruit (hopefully there will be some) from the “breakfast”.
Meal #3: This will either be on my own, or provided for me (i.e. all conference attendees are served a meal in large hall). Here I will do my best and eat what I can.
Meal #4: I was planning to buy a bunch of Clif Bars or some such thing. They will be providing afternoon “snacks” but that will probably be cookies and soda.
Meal #5: Normal dinner, again out to eat. One of my weaknesses is Tex Mex, and I’ll be in the land of heavenly, properly made Tex Mex. Suggestions?
Meal #6: I’m thinking of using Nitrean and bringing some all natural peanut butter with me.
The trip to San Antonio on Sunday will be on Amtrak. Their food offerings are limited and I’ll do the best I can, but I am basically regarding the meals as more “cheat”.
So if anyone else has some suggestions for getting through a week long conference out of town, I’d love to hear them.
Thanks!
karatetricker April 17th, 2007, 10:55 AM My only suggestion is make the best choices you can with what you're given. One week of not eating "perfect" won't kill you, just be smart. When you come home, get back on track and you'll be just fine...

I travel all the time for meetings like this. I'll generally eat breakfast on my own before the meeting. It's nice if a hotel has a fridge, really nice if they have a microwave. I'll bring some fruit and get some cottage cheese for the fridge if they have one. I eat CC with Nitrean mixed in and fruit for breakfast if there's no microwave. If there is a microwave, I can pick up some egg beaters on the way to the hotel and make in the room (bring some tuperware). Salt/pepper/spices are nice here.
Eat some fruit at the meeting if you want to be social.
Other "snacks" I'll have would include stuff like jerky/nuts, more fruit (apples are nice to keep in my bag), or a shaker with some protein powder. I'll often have two portions of powder with me in case I need another shake later.
I generally don't do the energy bar thing very often. I tried some of the "High Protein" Greens+ bars the other day that don't have much bad stuff in them but have quality protein and some of the Greens+ green powder, and they were pretty decent.
If you're eating Mexican, fajitas are my normal choice if I'm trying to be as healthy as possible. I just eat the meat/onions/peppers, and skip the tortillas, sour cream, etc. Probably fried in a bunch of fat, but I don't eat there in the first place if I'm trying to be perfectly clean. Lots of Mexican places these days have nice fish dishes as well.
My before bed snack would again be something like CC with nitrean/PB/nuts.
As KT says, don't beat yourself up too much. It's only for a short period, and it won't kill you.

I called and checked with the hotel, no free fridge unless it's for baby food or medical reasons. Otherwise $25. Hard to expense that.
I'm looking at this whole thing as more of a personal challenge, can I keep up my routine while out of town? The goal for the week will be no weight gain. So I think I'll prepare by stocking up on a few things I can bring with me, and I might venture out to get a few things when I'm there.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep em coming if you have more.

Are you driving? If so, there's always the cooler and the ice machine :) (Can you tell I've been here before?) Since you're coming from St Louis, I'd bet you aren't, but I just thought I'd throw that out there. You could buy one of those cheap styrofoam coolers, though.
When I was doing this literally every week last summer, I started carrying my Ironmaster Adjustable DBs with me in the car.
Flying kind of rules that out. 150 lbs of DBs wouldn't be nice to check :D

Actually I'm taking the train there, and flying back. I leave St. Louis at 7:30PM Saturday night and arrive in San Antonio at 10:30PM Sunday night. I've got a sleeper roomette, so I'm looking forward to the trip.
