View Full Version : Energy Drinks etc.....
mathboy3 April 15th, 2007, 10:47 PM Typically, when I get home from work, my energy level is not what I would like it to be to work out. Some days I can easily make it through a work out...and some days it is extremely tough. I have tried the drink "Speed Shot" and it seems to do the trick. It is about $3 per drink...which can get a little expensive. Are any of you using anything else in the form or a drink, or food for that matter to give you energy? Thanks in advance.
mustbesix April 16th, 2007, 12:10 AM I'm thinking about trying the 5 hr energy shots I've seen on TV recently. They're supposed to be no sugar, no carbs. It seems the only ingredients are a bunch of vitamins that I need anyway. I start a new job tomorrow and have to get up at 5 am so it seems like a good time to give it a go.
lil_dave April 16th, 2007, 12:26 AM I drink way too many energy drinks.. I rarely drink when I goto the bar anymore but I'll be downing red bulls all night
MannishBoy April 16th, 2007, 01:21 AM Much cheaper than energy drinks is just caffeine pills. No Doz or generic.
Not that I don't like a good sugar free energy drink on occasion :spaz:
lil_dave April 16th, 2007, 02:34 AM I pop enough pills as it is..
I usually just end up buying the energy drinks cuz I hate walking around without a drink in my hand... I always feel weird
Traxxus April 16th, 2007, 02:44 AM I live on these things! I had been a caffeine addict long before I stopped drinking soda, so these helped pick up the slack. They also happily quench any sort of sugar craving I get from time to time.
I prefer the "Lo-Carb Monster Energy" and the "Socko Slim" brands, personally.
One just has to wonder what kind of kidney damage these things might be doing... They're full of B vitamins, so expect fluorescent yellow pee at the least! :p
crupiea April 16th, 2007, 11:44 AM You can't make it throug a workout without a liquid candy bar? Come on. Maybe it's your motivation. We all have tough workouts but it's working through the adversity that builds character. Just dig deep and lift.
GRCRYSTYK April 16th, 2007, 01:21 PM Be careful with these drinks,..They can have bad effects on your system,...and it's not easy coming off of them. That's tough all by itself,...

Are you eating anything before the workout?
Getting some carbs in you before lifting can boost your energy level. An apple, banana, cup of applesauce, etc. will help get you fired up. There's also coffee if you need an adreneline boost. Barring that, caffiene pills are dirt cheap.
I get a serious energy dip just after work, too, but rebound rather well after about an hour's rest. Would it be possible to take a short nap first? That might help.
mathboy3 April 16th, 2007, 01:34 PM M@...thanks for the eating tip. I will try eating a banana and see if that helps. I've tried a Powerbar...sometimes that doesn't seem to do the trick. I do not like coffee...so that one is out. Unfortunately, because of my schedule, wife, kids, etc... a nap is out too. Thanks for the tips though.

I agree. It seems like working out on caffiene energy might be somewhat counter-productive?

I doubt it. It's not all bad for working out.
For instance, this study (http://www.uga.edu/news/artman/publish/070109_CaffeineStudy.shtml) shows reduced soreness after using caffeine. However, I'm not sure how applicable that is to people who work out, or to people who have built up a tolerance.
But the point is that caffeine isn't as evil as the hype in some situations.
