View Full Version : good fats? ryanx April 15th, 2007, 09:02 PM I keep reading about"healthy" fats- My question is- what are healthy fats? examples? chris0374 April 15th, 2007, 09:04 PM fish oil, flaxseed oil, natural peanut butter, nuts/seeds, oily fish, avocado, olive oil, etc. NEdge April 15th, 2007, 10:07 PM Most 'natural' fats are heathy - in the 'right' or appropriate quantities, including saturated fats from meat, eggs, coconut, butter etc...as well as those listed above. It's the trans fats that have no place in a diet, and IMO, processed vegetable oils are not good either. nawzyah April 16th, 2007, 02:26 AM Yes, those fats listed above are healthy but be mindful about how much omega-6 fatty acids you consume relative to the amount of omega-3 fatty acids. An ideal ratio you should be shooting for would be 3:1 up to 5:1 (omega-6 : omega-3) as opposed to the typical ratio of 20:1 which is prevalent in American diet. Do a google search. There's a wealth of information out there on omega-3's vs omega-6's. Ditto on eschewing trans fats! Nasty hydrogenated fats from hell. MannishBoy April 16th, 2007, 02:39 AM I'll throw in lean beef fat. Not only is it high in good stuff like CLA (grassfed even moreso), it also has as about half it's fat made of of monounsaturateds. That's the same healthy stuff you hear about from olive oil. So don't necessarily think all beef is bad for you because of it's fat. There's more "good" fat in there than "bad" fat (saturated). Even saturated fats at a certain level are healthy. |
