View Full Version : Starting over from scratch - suggestions?
TeamNinjaFan April 15th, 2007, 05:38 PM It's been several months since I last came here. I used to weigh 160 lbs. But today I weigh around 190 lbs. That's a lot for a tiny guy like myself. I'm only about 5'4".
I recently started my 'diet'. You guys won't like this but I'm eating low carbs in order to lose weight quickly. But for some reason I don't know if that will work. I don't feel confident. This diet worked a few years ago. I went down from 220 lbs. to 160 lbs. (with very little excercise of course). I've been doing a lot of cardio lately too.
But I don't know what to do. I don't think I can do this by myself. But I have to. My goal at the moment is to go back to 160. Once I reach my goal, I will start lifting more weights.
The reason why I want to lose weight as soon as possible is because most of my clothes doesn't fit. Most of them were size Medium. I can't afford to buy new larger clothes either. Even if I did, it would be a waste of money because I would throw them away once I lost weight.
Anyways, I'm open to any suggestions. I'm going to read a couple of stickies because I forgot most of the important stuff. I don't know if I should go for a healthy balanced diet or a diet that will help me lose weight faster. I guess it all depends how long it will take to lose weight if I do everything correctly (eat right and excercise daily).
Foley April 15th, 2007, 05:56 PM Eat at a slight caloric deficit, lift weights regularly, and add in a little cardio. That is what you need to do in short :)
What is your nutrition plan at the moment?
Don't wait to start lifting weights, start NOW! :)
Black-Dawn April 15th, 2007, 06:00 PM The decision on how drastic a diet to follow is of course yours, but I think that taking it a little slower may be better in the long term.
Regardless, Whatever you decide to do "lifting more weights" Is not mutually exclusive with losing fat faster.
as a matter of fact lifting weights will supplement your fat burning efforts by boosting your metabolism for many hours post workout. Lifting weights may cause the scale to go down at slower rate, but its fat you are trying to lose here not weight.

I usually eat 4 scrambled eggs for breakfast. When I'm at school, I eat a sandwich (whole wheat bread, 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of american cheese - yes I know its bad). And then I eat salad (romaine lettuce, croutons, salt and lemon juice) with meat or chicken (seperate).
And yeah, I lift weights. I only have a set of 35 lbs. dumbbells and bench with barbell & weights. I don't have access to a gym so I work out at home.
guava April 15th, 2007, 06:04 PM As an average, surveys often find that the longer it takes a person to lose the weight, the longer they will keep the weight off. This is because the process is being treated as a lifestyle change, instead of as a means to an end. If you're "dieting to lose weight," you sometimes find yourself depriving yourself so much that it's not enjoyable to keep up the same routines, or it becomes tempting to go back to old habits once you reach your target. (as you have already discovered)
It would be a mistake not to start lifting weight RIGHT NOW. It will only speed up how fast you lose the fat.
ELISOPH April 15th, 2007, 07:00 PM I did the exact same thing you are about to do. 4 times..... I used the Atkins diet to loose weight fast without working out. I did do some cardio, but not much. I lost 30 pounds in like a 90 days. I was so happy. Not for long. I gained it all back and then some. I did that 3 times and just gave up. Then 3 months ago I found this site. John is actually a friend of mine. His wife and my wife are lifelong best friends. She had told me before that John had lost alot of weight and created a web site, but I just never took the time to check. After about 1 month of reading and studying the forums and the sticky's here on the site, I made my move and stated my own transformation.
First you have to make this a lifestyle change. Not a diet. Start eating healthy. Decide to eat healthy for the rest of your life. Eat a large amount of protien, some carbs, some healthy fat. As you read in the forums you will understand what I meas by "healthy fat". Start working out with weights. Push yourself. Build muscle. Every muscle in your body. Pay special attention to your large muscle group. Pecs, legs, back, and abs. Again, check the stickies. Lastly, add cardio. As I said before for weight lifting, push yourself. I am the perfect example. I started at the beginning of Feb. I have consistantly lost 2 to 3 pounds per week for a total of about 26 pounds. But I have also added some muscle mass. I eat about 2200 calories per day. But I am being very strict. You have to change your mindset. Food is not just for enjoyment. Think of it as fuel for you body. I think whatever you put into your body is exactly what your going to get out of it. I am sorry this is so long, but you sound just like me. I hope I can stop you from making the same mistakes I did so many years ago.
Oh yeah....take pictures. Keep a weekly journal of your measurements. I am so glad I did. When you are able to see your own progress, it will really drive you. Good luck.:tu:

Why the yo-yoing?? Go up get on a diet to go down to go up again. You have to clear this food problem up, or you won't make 30 years old. This isn't the way to live.
Calories count first, macros come next. My guess is you need 1800-1900 calories a day. You need a fullbody workout 3 days a week. You want to build muscle and a metabolism. Look around and find something.
