View Full Version : Back Pain
mikey Wed, April 14th, 2004, 02:30 PM Since last week I have been experancing some back pain and discomfort. the pain is not that great at all but annoying. I can't seen to get comfortable in any postition, like sitting, standing or even lying down. I have been lifting heavier weights for the last two months and I wonder if there is any reletoinship to this. and also I wonder if anyone else has had a simliar experance like this. I decided to see my doctor about this and will be going this afternoon. I'll post back later tonight after the visit to the doc.
goldenegg Wed, April 14th, 2004, 04:00 PM I had a similar problem. I resolved it (along with all other muscle tension/pain) by adding proper stretching to my workouts. I also stretch for a few minutes every morning before heading to work. Makes a huge difference!
Collegefour Wed, April 14th, 2004, 06:22 PM I'll be interested to see what your doctor says. I've had this problem for a year or two, and I think lifting has actually helped a lot, not to mention banishing 35 pounds or so. I still get back aches, tho I can make mine go away by lying down, so they are really a classic symptom of stress, I think.
marcus Thu, April 15th, 2004, 02:36 AM It could be a number of things but my guess is you have weak core stability muscles and your spine is not getting enough support.
Check out the thread I've linked to below. It explains the exact exercises a Physiotherapist would prescribe. A doctor is useless when it comes to this, because unlike a physio they dont have enough training in rehabilitation.
Start doing these exercises (you dont need any equipment) and you will notice a difference.

Man, I FEEL for ya. Yesterday, while working my legs, I pulled a muscle in my back. Man, did that hurt!! I had to stop my workout and come home. It got so bad by the time I got home, it hurt to breath!! It's better now, but I can still fell it when I take deep breaths. I'll be cooling my exercise program until it heels. The last thing I want is a permanent back injury!
mikey Thu, April 15th, 2004, 11:01 AM OK well he said that it is a mild muscle strain. he gave me a scrip for a pain reliver and a mild muscle relaxer. I have to return in a week for follow-up. also no weightlifting for a week or untill my back feels better.
I am going to check out the core excercises thanks for that, I want to do more for my abs to buld a stronger core too, so this does not happen again.

Well, a year ago I had lots of back pain, which increased with squatting, etc. My doctor thought it was probably just a muscle too, but I knew better, I'd had the pain for over 2 years. After 2 months of uneffective therapy sessions, they finally did an MRI and found out I had a ruptured disc. I had a MicroDiscectomy surguery last June (or was it July???) and now I feel great!
Just to show you that doctors arent always right the first time. Make sure you keep on top of this problem, if it doesn't go away, ask for an MRI. It's the only way they can really see what your discs and vertebrae look like.

Thanks niko
It is improving some and I do plan to keep up in this if the pain continues. however I have metal plates in my body that helped to repair some broken bones from an accident 10 years ago. I was told that MRI is no acceptable for me any more with all that metal in me. Are there any other methods of testing to see the discs? lets hope its not that bad but I am glad it all worked you for you.
niko Fri, April 23rd, 2004, 04:54 PM Hm. They still might be able to do a CAT scan even your metal, but I think to do a CAT they might have to inject some fluid in your back area, which I hear hurts a bit ..
Hope it starts to feel better for you. Does taking Ibuprofen help at all?
Oh , and I just remembered. That muscle relaxer? They gave me some of those too, but I just never improved at all. So if you are improving a little then it might not be too serious :)

Super20G Tue, April 27th, 2004, 03:06 PM I have degenerative disk disease in my lower spine... I have had CT scans and no, you do not need any injections :/ And yes, a CT scan is good enough to make an accurate diagnosis.
smalltex Tue, April 27th, 2004, 07:18 PM Having metal plates from orthopedic surgery should not prevent you from having an MRI--perfectly safe. Now if you have spine rods those might degrade the image quality, but otherwise, the presence of some metal plates or screws from orthopedic proceedures will be of no harm.
