BeeJay =) sevenatenine April 8th, 2007, 05:00 AM Funny you ask cause this was just discussed in the beginners section not long ago. Heres (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=35231) a link to that thread, it should be what your looking for. Archistrategos April 8th, 2007, 05:08 AM Take a look at the stickies, marcus' Nutrition sticky in particular (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=1222) (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=1222%29). Read the whole thing, but pay extra attention to the Fats section. The forum search is also your friend. :) I just did a search and came up with a thread discussing natural (natty) PB versus the "regular" type (Jif, etc.): http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=5440&highlight=natural+peanut+butter+jiffy Let's do an ingredient comparison. Regular Creamy Jif has roasted peanuts, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, fully hydrogenated rapeseed and soybean oils, mono- and diglycerides, molasses, sugar, and salt. See the nutritional info here: http://www.calorieking.com/foods/calories-in-nut-spreads-peanut-butter-creamy_f-Y2lkPTYzODkmYmlkPTExMzYmZmlkPTgyNzg3JmVpZD0xMzc3MT EzNzUmcG9zPTEmcGFyPSZrZXk9amlm.html I usually buy Laura Scudder's Organic Nutty natural peanut butter, which has organic roasted peanuts, roasted peanut oil, and salt. See nutritional info here: http://www.calorieking.com/foods/calories-in-nut-spreads-peanut-butter-organic-nutty_f-Y2lkPTYzODkmYmlkPTE2MTkmZmlkPTE0MDk3MCZlaWQ9MTM3Nz ExMzA1JnBvcz02JnBhcj0ma2V5PWxhdXJhIHNjdWRkZXI.html Personally I try to avoid trans fat as much as possible so I wouldn't buy Jif in any case (look for "partially hydrogenated" in the ingredient list). I think next time I'm at the store I'll look for an unsalted natty PB. Some people have no problem with an occasional tablespoon or two of peanut butter so they buy whatever brand they happen to like, as illustrated in the thread I mentioned above. It's really up to you. You'll find that there is almost never absolute agreement on anything in the fitness world. :p Many times there is no "right way" or "correct answer". Part of JSF is becoming informed about nutrition and fitness, doing your own research and drawing your own conclusions, rather than simply following a plan by rote that someone else has given you. It can be overwhelming in the beginning but there is true power in knowing the details of the things in your life. Most people make poor fitness/diet decisions simply because they don't know how it all works. They have to rely on the advice of other people and all too often the people and places they turn to for advice are filled with misinformation. While you may not find a definitive answer here at JSF, the hope is that you can make an informed decision. I'll step off my soapbox now, hopefully the above links will give you some insight into the natty PB debate. :tu: EDIT: the link sevenatenine posted is a great thread on the topic! |
