(1) This first site is an article by Alwyn Cosgrove on Squats. Very interesting read. It's not what you think:-

(2) This site goes into depth on the pros and cons of Matt Furey's work:-

Noticed that in the Hindu Squat, the knees go way past the toes. This therefore would not be a good ex to recommend for someone with knee problems....right? or wrong?

Yeah Steve Cotter might be King of the Pistols. Those plyometric ones onto the table? That's ill.

In the past I've had problems with Patella. But I'm determined to get some kind of Squat program into the picture.

I Deadlift routinely once a week. But only go max every second or third week. Deading...after a thorough leg warmup...does not bother my Patellas. As opposed to the traditional Squat..which does.

The Speedskater one-leg squat does not bother my Patellas.

I do tons of other leg work ex's.

But I've found that the assisted Squat is opening a new door. By "assisted" I mean....I rigged up a rope and handle and connected it to a post at about stomach height.
Leaning backward slightly with both arms outstretched straight I descend into the Squat. At first I was wary of doing full Rom deep. But I found I can do this without the Patellas complaining.

First thing I noticed was that this ex hits the lower back muscles in a way that the Dead can't. And I'd been wanting to develop the lower back more.

After a while I got braver and tried a Single-leg Pistol in the same fashion with one leg straight out in front.

Sweet Mother of Montezuma!!   !!

Only got about 4 reps in before the Glutes/Back/Hams threatened to start a riot...

Ironically I Dead quite a bit of poundage.

But the feeling was nothing compared to this.

Even weighted Speedskaters don't produce the same effect.

Nor do Step-ups.

I guess because of the assisted "lean-back" the Hams/Glutes/ come into the picture more. But doing them this way keeps the knees well behind the toes, which seems to work in my favor.

My behind now feels like somebody spanked me with a cricket bat :D

What you seem to be describing is actually a rig that allows you to get some glute kick-back into the picture. But don't knock the speedskaters or step-ups. Load 'em up and those are quite effective. Pistols are great but they aren't the only game in town.

It also sounds like you might think about deck squats.
