View Full Version : ON Protein Scoop does not equal 30 grams?

I was measuring my scoop of protein and it did not measure 30 grams. Has anyone else noticed this. The scale that I bought is new so there "shouldn't" be a problem. The scale says 24 grams. Should I use the scoop or the scale to estimate my protein intake?

I've measured a scoop of ON whey in the past and I remember it being 29-30g most of the time:confused:

Not unusual. My Nitrean scoops normally only give me like 25-28 g. Most scoops of different brands are "close" but not all that accurate IME.

Totally would depend on the type of whey, how hard you packed the scoop (was the whey fluufy/aerated for example).

This is why I always say get a scale- because you can make a level scoop hold anywhere from ~25-35g

I was thinking about this.

Now I sit here reflecting all the times I have grossly miscalculated protien scoops in my shakes. :D

The scale. You need to pack the protein pretty tightly in the scooper in order to get the 30 grams. I use the scale for almost everything, it's more accurate and it's faster and easier to use.

Place shaker on scale, [Zero-out] add protein powder tell it hits desired number of grams [Zero-out] add milk tell it hits desired number of grams, shake and enjoy.

A scale can be a bad thing if your anal and obsesive.... I cant even make a peanut butter and banana sandwedge on the counter anymore.... I make it on my scale so I can Zero it out between the bread, peanut butter, and banana.

My girlfriend laughs at me and pokes fun, but it doesn't take any more time to zero-out between steps then to just eyeball it on the counter, and she can't laugh at the results ;)

I thought they only had 24 grams in them. I use the ON Gold Standard protein for all of my shakes. I usually just put a couple heaping scoops in and shake. I dont nail it down to a science but I figure if I put two heaping scoops in with water then I'm packing about 50 grams of protein. Is buying a scale really that necessary?

Probably not, but I would rather be a little over than a lot under, which was what was happening in my case. I was off my 6 grams per scoop. If you have a couple scoops a day this can add up in the long run if I am trying to calculate the macross for a bulking diet. Am I bein anal? Maybe, but I am aware of my analness:D (I'm pretty sure that last word is made up)

Honestly though, will it really make any difference at all whether you've got 25 grams of protein as opposed to 30 grams of protein in your shake?

Like I said, I know I sound anal, about it. I'm not denying that, but let me pose a hypothetical situation. If I have 6 scoops a day and I assume that the scoop is 30 grams(when its really 25), at the end of the day I actually missed on 30 total grams. My scoops were actually 23 and 24 most of the time though. Will it make a big difference if I see the whole picture? Probably not. But I did start to notice that I was short changing carbs in other meals, assuming the mesuring cups were correct. All these little misses add up.

I never really thought about all of that. When I have a shake or a meal I usually just calculate up the amount of protein I am intaking Where can I get a decent scale from and what am I looking at in terms of price?

Possibly. Personally, while I'm on a strict cut, I like to make sure I know the exact amounts of protein powder that's going into my shakes. I've only been south of 10 percent body fat on a few occasions, but during those times, I've found it to be quite beneficial to monitor my protein intake by 5 - 10 gram increments so I can make accurate, progressive changes to my diet.

Now bulking, that's a different story. I just round off my scoops and enjoy!

I weigh and pre-portion everything (whoever makes rubbermaid has made a mint on me)...including my protein powder. It keeps me honest.
