View Full Version : Sudden loss in cardiac capacity?
Jikbot Mon, March 5th, 2007, 09:12 AM Maybe I've been pushing too hard... or I'm about to kick the bucket.
Did my usual week of 50 min cardio sessions last week. Thursdays workout was crummy, seemed like I kept having to slow down; felt tired, skin got clammy. I did notice I had a sore throat and was feeling a bit down, so I attributed it to a cold or something. I decided to take a couple of days off.
Saturday, went to the bar that night, ate some crap food(1 order dry ribs), drank some beer. Felt ok. Sunday, ate pretty good, except for a burger I grabbed on the way home (travelling). Went to work out Sunday night after I got home... didn't do real well. Couldn't keep the HR down with the intensity levels I was used to (My bike has a scale of 1-8, usually it takes 7 to get my heart over 155, I had it over 150 with 5. Over 160 even, at 90 rpm.)
This morning I walked into work, about a block or so, something that usually doesn't even get my heart rate up at all. After climbing the steps to the 2nd floor, my heart was pounding like a jackhammer. (est 130+ bpm)
What do you think? Doctor time? I know I'm going to stop cheating on weekends, the salt is getting to me. Even the booze seems to make my hr go up when I'm having a couple of drinks. Anxiety maybe.
If I feel like crap tonight I'm going to take 3 or 4 days off. Could be overtrained, though I find that hard to believe after friday and saturday w/o off. Better get a will together.

Good luck!

Overtraining is a cumulative, long term thing. If you were actually overtrained then two workouts off would not help. If you were just under recovered though, that would be perfect.
What's your training been like up to now? Do you keep a journal here online?
Jikbot Thu, March 8th, 2007, 07:41 PM I started training in earnest around the 2nd week of January, at around 20 minutes plus warmup/cooldown on the recumbent, keeping my hr around 130-135. I've gradually increased volume and intensity over the last 5 weeks, adding 10 minutes a week and allowing my hr to hit 150 or 160.
Seems I'm back to normal now, I'll be hitting the weights and then the bike again soon tonight. Seems I may have been dehydrated last time. Thanks for the advice on overtraining.
My weight routine involves simple excersizes like one legged squats w/o weight, push ups (I'm 250+ lbs, these aren't bad for difficulty!), crunches, lateral raises, bent over rows, tricep kickbacks, standing rows, nothing real complicated. I do full body 3x a week, and try to pack 3 sets of 10 of each exercise in a half hour.
Nutrition, I've done a major cleanup of my diet, cut out all the fried food, quit drinking coffee, started eating more whole grains, more chicken, lean beef, vegetables (salads or frozen green and orange stuff.), more water, etc. I was still cheating on a regular basis (2x mcdonalds/wk, usually just a sandwich, bagel w/a light cream cheese @ coffee shop), but I think I'm done with that at this point. Not worth it.
Gordo Fri, March 9th, 2007, 08:01 AM Don't fool around with would-be doctors on the internet.... Go see a live doctor. Stop looking for excuses not to because you don't want to hear the possible answers. Rule out anything bad first, then come back for training advice once you're cleared of any medical issues.
Your ticker ain't something to fool with or guess what might be wrong.

Doctor time.
I mean how does this sound? A guy having a massive coronary speaks as his last words to the paramedics: "but the guys on the internet said it was just overtraining...."
If you are experiencing a much different heart response to a program of exercise you have stuck with for a while?
By the way how old are you, and what is your maximum heart rate? 130bpm seems a little low for "pounding like a jackhammer".
Still, doctor time for this sort of question.
