Hi everyone. My name is Jace. I'm a diabetic that weighs over 300lbs. I just turned 33 on Saturday and I'm kinda new here. I just wanted to finally make my first post here and just say that so many of you are such an inspiration to me. Since I've kinda been hiding in the shadows watching people change, about 6 months ago I finally felt it was my time.

6 1/2 months ago I stopped drinking soda and the daily Starbuck runs also stopped. 6 Months ago I stopped eating fast food. 1 month ago i started to walk and I could only make 1 mile. I'm now walking 5 miles. It's been a struggle and I am losing weight the whole nutrition concept is still making my head spin, but little steps. A co-worker who bodybuilds told me something that keeps me pushing ahead. If you tell enough people what you are doing, they will watch you. They will watch for changes. You are in control. Somehow those words hit the right nerve.

I don't know how much weight I've lost, but my clothes fit better and my heart doesn't hurt anymore. HA HA! I guess that's a good sign.:)

A big thank you to John Stone for getting all of us together to support each other.

So there ya go. I'm here now. And I'm so thankful.

Hi Jace,
Great to see some San Diego people here!!!

You are making the best possible decision for yourself by wanting to shape up.

I was the same weight as you but without the diabetes. You can do this, it just takes a bit of sticking with it and work. I was 300 lbs in Nov 05 and today am 174.

Diet is the key to this. You can knock yourself out with workouts but if the diet is not locked in, you wont be as cuccessful as you know you can be.

I used Tom Venutos "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" program. It is really similar to what you will read here in the stickies. It's just nice to have it in one file.

I only look at it one week at a time. My goal is 1-2 lbs. Just repeat that goal every week and stick with your diet and the lbs will melt of. If I looked at it like I have to lose 100 Lbs, it would seem to much to overcome.

Get locked on with the diet. You live in San Diego, fire up the grill, bust out the chicken and start eating.

Best of luck.

Congrats on your progress so far. I also was confused on nutrition for a long time, occasionally I still am. Just keep reading and gaining knowledge and the fat will come off.

Welcome and keep up the great work. Your friend is right. Wehn you tell a bunch of people what your doing, they will watch you and compliment you when they see a change. Baby steps is the best thing to do IMO. Keep it up.

Quick question though; and don't be afraid to refuse to anwer if it's a little too personal. Have you been a diabetic most of your life? Was it brought on by weight? Not sure if that's possible but I've heard of weight affecting diabetics big-time. Just curious as to what changes you'll have to make as a result of it.

First off thank you so much for the compliment. Though I don't think I deserve it since I really shouldn't of neglected my health in the first place. I'm just basically catching up. :D

Now on to your last set of answers. 1)I found out I was diabetic in 2002. It started out as what I had thought were flu like symptoms. Then I got a yeast infection on my genital area. My tounge turned green with a seperate yeast infection (fun huh?). And within 3 months I lost 60 lbs and was throwing up everything I ate and nothing quenched my thirst. (longer answer than you thought..huh?) Did the whole hospital thing. It was a wake up call. I just hit snooze for the past 4 years.

2) It was because of my weight, that and my constant craving for sweets. Serioiusly. I have never liked salt, but I am always craving sweets. I was drinking 2 to 3 bottles of Gatorade(?) a day at times. Looking back I'm suprised I didn't get sicker sooner. Makes me wonder if other diabetics have gone through that type of craving.

3) I have an appointment to get a whole bunch of tests done to determine what needs to be fine tuned and hopefull I can cut back on my insulin since I'm now active and eating a lot better. I just don't know yet. All I can say is that I haven't felt so great as I do right now!

And guess what? There's a cure for Type II diabetes! You're on your way to curing yourself. Keep it up!

Not everyone that loses weight gets cured from Diabetes. :nono:

I'm wanting to believe that I will. But I'm prepared mentally to have this challenge for the rest of my life. And even if my system becomes normal I don't ever want to stop "Eating" the way I have being diabetic. Once you have the disease, there is always a chance it will come back.

Right now I'm just excited that I've started now than never. Which was the way I was going before. Thank you for your support!

Tell us about it, I have never heard of a "cure" only keeping it in check by diet and exercise. Where are they keeping this "cure"?
