Not going to get into Smith-bashing here or the pro's and cons of using either method.

Yeah, it's been covered ad nauseum. A search of the forum will yield more than enough material for one to formulate their own opinions about the merit of the machine.

Even better than a search would be to experiment with two macrocycles using free weight squats in one, and smith squats in another.

The squat is a total body exercise so be sure to take stats (weight, bodyfat, strength levels in other lifts, bodypart measurements) before and after, say a 12 week routine of both. Then base your opinion.
