View Full Version : Cheap and healthy food I can take to work
Whoracle Fri, February 23rd, 2007, 07:05 PM My biggest problem with my diet right now is that I go to Mcdonalds for lunch, and get like 2 things off the dollar menu because well it's cheap. Money is tight right now as I'm a poor college student only working part time. But anyway I work in an office so I can brown bag it, so what can I bring to work that's cheap and healthy.

Tuna in wholemeal bread. Much cheaper than McDonalds.
shadowmonk Fri, February 23rd, 2007, 11:26 PM I'm curious about this too. My school schedule doesn't allow me to go home and cook a meal. Is there anything other than tuna that will work? I like it, but it would get tiring everyday.
SwoleCat Fri, February 23rd, 2007, 11:56 PM Anything worth having is worth planning for. :tucool:
There are tons of things you can take to work in containers. Steak, chicken, tuna, veggies, etc. Whatever you eat at home you can prepare and take with you.
You never plan to fail you only fail to plan.

chris0374 Sat, February 24th, 2007, 12:04 AM Go to wholesale. Buy bulk brown rice, veggies, and chicken breast. Cook them and carry them in your plastic container. It'll last you awhile.
dluc Sat, February 24th, 2007, 12:30 AM Oats and eggs were pretty cheap last time I checked.
mxhxr Fri, March 2nd, 2007, 11:13 AM For me it's more a matter of effort than cost...
It's just so much easier to pick up Mickey D's than to prepare something in advance...a habit I'm really trying to break.
Sent Fri, March 2nd, 2007, 12:50 PM True, but you feel so much better cooking your own food and stuff :tu:

Actually, if you have $2.00 a day, that's $14 a week for lunches. You could easily pick up canned tuna, vegetables, fruit, meal replacement bars, etc for that amount (it "looks" cheap up front, but it actually does cost more to eat out rather than to get the groceries ... it will actually be more expensive in the long run to eat the McDonald's dollar menu because medical bills aren't cheap and the second leading cause of death in the US is poor diet).

I think you hit the spot right there. For most people, I don't think that it is ever about the cost. It is easier, and habitual to stop by MickeyDs or somewhere to grab a quick bite to eat. Like you said, it is more a habit to most, and a habit that needs broken if you seriously want to make progress. I have gotten myself mostly off of stopping by fast food places, though on occasion I still do. It is much more satisfying to have a nice meal that you made yourself than to buy some bulk cooked fast food.

 oh so true!
Fitness_Wannabee Sat, March 3rd, 2007, 06:01 AM My usual prepared snacks for work:
cottage cheese in a small ziplock container(it doesn't spoil in 7 hours)
cut veggies in ziplock bags
nature valley granola bars
Another thing, I buy multi-packs of canned tuna, salmon, turkey, chicken, roast beef at Costco. Enough supply for 6 weeks at least. It's not too expensive and you can buy bulk toilet paper there too!
