hi y'all

I am currently cutting and have seen a doctor about some depression, anxiety, etc that I am dealing with. They want me to start taking Wellbutrin. I have never taken anything like this before. The only medications I have ever taken are for asthma.

So, my question is...and I know that all of you are not doctors...but, I am DEATHLY afraid of gaining weight. I know that no matter how the drugs might help, if I gain weight, I will be worse off than before. Has or is anyone else taking this (or other AD) and still had an effective cut?

I have been on several different anti-depressants over the years :o Each and everyone had different side effects. Some made me want to gain weight, others made me hyper, etc. If memory serves me correctly Wellbutrin is pretty mild and shouldn't have major side effects (unless you weigh 90 lbs.). It's just something you'll have to be careful of and watch what types of food you eat more than how much. I would not advise a cut during a depression cycle based on my experience. :bang: It's just one more thing to add stress to your life which you really don't need. Make a plan with goals like, "go to the gym x times per week", "only eat healthy foods each day". Everything else will work itself out :D

Hey there,

I am currently on an SSRI and had the same concerns before I started it and brought them up with my pschycologist. She recommended that I try them and monitor my weight and progress at the gym, if I should find any effects that I was not happy with then I was to tell her and we could try something else. Luckily I had no fitness related side effects, (there was about a week in the beginning when I really felt that I was flying).

I think that it is best if you chat to your doctor about your concerns and try to strike a deal with them that if you are not happy they can prescribe something else.

Good luck and keep us informed.

BTW - I also suffer from anxiety related depression so if you need a chat please feel free.

IF you don't mind me asking...which one were you on?

I know you replied to Jokat, but the ones I remember being on were Lexapro and Prozac. The Lexapro was about three years ago and the Prozac was about twelve years ago. The Lexapro had no side effects after about two weeks.

A friend of mine at work was on Wellbutrin. I don't think she had any side effects other than being tired. Also, checkout http://health.yahoo.com for additional information.

What did you do to overcome it if you don't mind me asking? I would much rather do without medications but I think my doc really thinks it is a good idea. You can PM me if you want. Thanks

I had the worst 8 months through this december, attempted to end it all twice in this period, I'm a bad bipolar case.

the way I managed to put head above ground wasn't through pills, which made me more depressed because I can't be happy if I'm big, but a few things such as:

staying to the diet / exercise routine... as well as working on big long term projects... saving money, relationships, school, exercise progress, creative projects (very important for me)... the kicker is that I need to occasionally get depressed as heck, so it works out about 2 days a week when I'm back at that stage... where I basically 'give up' and resolve to be destroyed... its not to be taken lightly these are reallllllly ugly days... but I don't take any immediate action I suffer through it, then say 'tomorrow I'll quit everything' of course I wake up the next day and things are different...

for me since it is regulated like this, it is almost like paying dues... while regular bipolars suffer a few months out of the year and live well the other few months, I organize mine through weekly spurts, *daily* spurts are the worst ahhhh... course it's not conscious I'm just trying to articulate how I work lol.

I don't know though, I'm not a success case I am still learning how to cope with these 'miserable hole' days. as is, I turn to smoking, which for me is better than anti-depressants, less of a committment, less side effects, etc... I don't let it be too much a habit though, sometimes I force myself to 'take it'

pills definitely worked for me, but they also didn't, because there was no life without them. but what got me out of it was when I started to write a long-term book... then a few weeks into that, I started my diet program, then a few weeks after that etc... etc.... after a while life is still meaningless, but it is now full enough to pass the time.... then something strange happens, I actually start to love my routine and look forward to things... though only on the good days.

DO NOT WORRY

although i am not on it now, i have taken welburtrin for 3 years, and i had actually no problem with weight gain at all. it is different than paxil, etc. so it works a little differently. you might even feel a little amped up at first.

furthermore, i would not recommend taking anything with ephederine while on these meds, unless you talk to your doctor.

one other thing... if your primary issue is anxiety, you might want to look at a different drug. talk to another doctor, maybe a psych.
