Hello...Any help or advice would be appreciated. 2 weeks ago, I was working back, and on my last heavy set of dead lifts, I felt a twinge in my shoulder. Nothing big, but I did stop.

Fast forward to now...My shoulder REALLY hurts, and every time I lean my head back, I get a killer pain that runs from the left side of the back of my neck to the back side of my shoulder. It doesn't keep me from doing lifts that the shoulder is involved in; heck, it really only hurts when it is strerched by doing stiff legged dead lifts or bent over barbell rows. All I can say is that I am tired of the pain, and wish it would go away.

Question: Does anyone know what this is? Has something like this happened to anyone else? What can I do about it?

I would appreciate the help.....

Is it a shooting pain, like being stabbed with a knife? I've had that from heavy shrugs. My working theory is that it somehow pisses off a nerve that runs out of the neck and down toward the arm, by either stressing it or by compressing it where it runs through the cervical foramin. In my case it goes away with time.

It's a pretty good (as in bad) pain. Doesn't bother me to shrug...Only on lifts that pull my arms to the front of my body. Otherwise, it bothers me when I tilt my head back; for instance, when I wash my hair in the shower. I guess it could be a nerve...I'm waiting it out since I am a puss when it comes to Doctors.

If it hurts while your doing those lifts then why are you doing them? it'll never recover that way. Your body needs to rest. Even if it doesn't hurt with other exercises you may still be working whatever muscle hurts. Try taking some time off and using some heat patches, bengay, or icyhot. I injure my traps from time to time and if i take a break for a couple days, apply the above treatments, lightly stretch, and have the wife massage it a little, it usually goes away.

I agree -- take some time off from those lifts. I know it is hard to make yourself do that .... hell, my shoulder was injured so badly one time that I could barely move my arm, yet like an idiot, I still insisted on doing weighted dips and bench presses even though I knew it was a bad idea. As a result, an injury that should have healed in a couple of weeks took nearly a year to heal. Don't be like me ... take some time off, and let it heal....otherwise, you may be in for a very long-term injury.
