Today is the first true rest day for three days. I had a moderately heavy leg day yesterday, and did pretty decent rowing volume the previous two days.
So this morning on my commute in to work, which involves about a mile walk through Manhattan, I felt like I was walking backwards - everyone else was passing me. It is odd because normally I walk almost twice as fast as the average New Yorker - it's about once a year or less than I come across a pedestrian who goes faster than me. So this is quite significant.
Now I didn't really feel unusual, and my strike rate was about the usual. So when I realized I was walking very slowly, it was very clear that what had happened was that my stride had been reduced by about a third to a half. I looked down and saw that this was about right.
I hadn't even noticed it at first. After about a half mile I started to feel it too. Mild stiffness in the hamstrings and calves.
So I'm pretty sure that last night's workout which included quite a bit of hamstrings and calves is the explanation. No mystery now.
It's just the weirdest exercise side effect I've come across so far.
