I did a 3 year stint doing butcher work in a small upscale retail butcher's, so for what it's worth, here's my advice:

If it was fresh when you put it in the fridge, or "freshly" thawed, I'd give it 3 days, no more. Fish is pretty easy to spot when it's gone bad, it'll start going slimy. Ick. Still in doubt? Put your nose to it, meat of any kind (and especially fish) will give off a tell tale funk when its past its due.

The trick is, sometimes the fish you buy isn't as fresh as advertised. I've seen things in the grocery display at the mega-supermarket that is NOT fresh. Beware seafood that is "manager's special" or anything pre-marinated! These are the ways they push items they most likely overstocked and undersold - meaning it's been there a few days. :nono:
