Hello, in my trips to the gym I have discovered that alot of women feel uncomfortable working out around many of the kind of men that frequent my local gym. This has led me to the idea of starting up an all women's gym in my area. I'm asking all of you women out there what you would like to see in your dream gym. But think about it as more of a club. I want to maybe add things like a spa/ massage and suntan later on. some questions about whats important:

-type of music you want to hear
-special equipment you want to see
-child care centre?
-pilates/yoga station?
-juice bar?
-decor?

let your imagination run wild on this one to benefit all the women in my area!

Haha, ok, point grudgingly taken. I didn't expect such a dead response from this board. Many of the women I've talked to already confirmed my suspicions about many women feeling more comfortable in a unisex gym.

That's what I was thinking too.:tucool:
Shmeeli, I think you're asking the wrong forum. :p

Not that all-women gyms aren't a great idea, but I don't think the kind of women that frequent these forums are necessarily the kind of women who would make use of them. I went into Shapes once and it was not a good fit for me. They had such a huge focus on weight loss (rather than cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength) that it made me uncomfortable.

One of the suggestions I would have is to keep in mind the moods associated with different color schemes (http://www.color-wheel-pro.com/color-meaning.html).

I'd really like to see a deep dark brownish red (like a brick or a kidney bean) in the strength training area, and an aqua/light blue shade in the yoga area.

Nickelback is good all-purpose music for a significant section of 20-35 year old women. You'd have to do a customer survey to be sure.

Yeah, my girlfriend joined a women's gym and was disappointed with the lack of free weights. The dumbbells only went up to 30lbs, and all of the trainers there were instructing her to use weights that were not even remotely challenging for her. She found that to be frustrating.

I think the overall layout of the weight room can influence whether women will be likely to use it. In my last gym, the weight room was small and crowded, and there were about 30 guys to every one woman. Even one of my female co-workers who was in remarkable shape (a competitive swimmer) felt uncomfortable there.....and this was mostly because she was often the only woman there and felt like she stuck out. I think many women looked in on the weight room, saw this huge crowd of guys, and decided not to go in.

In my current gym, it is much more open and spacious, and you aren't constantly tripping over other people and competing for equipment. You can go somewhere and do your own thing without really being noticed. Consequently, there are alot more women at this gym.

I got something that purports to be a free membership to Curves today. Either it's some sort of spam or someone here is a wise guy.
