DISCLAIMER: I liked a lot about this movie, but had some major beef with it.
First there were the 'graphics'. In the first Matrix there were all of 3 or 4 CGI shots. In the last there were around 1,000. From my perspective that's a lazy directory/cinematographer. They invented some amazing technology (bullet-time?) for the first one. That style got copied instantly because it was so ground-breaking. Nothing like that will happen for the last one. There was nothing new visually.
Secondly, all the CGI looked horrid. Maybe I have sensitive eyes, but it was PAINFULLY obvious when they switched between reality and CG. Take a look at The Last Samurai. THAT was some subtle CGI. You don't think those horses actually fell at the end, do you? That's where CGI should be used, IMO. Also, "Eternal Sunshine" used some great CGI. It wasn't showy, it was obvious, but it was done well.
I did like the story overall though. Everybody got ramped up after the first one that nothing could have topped it. Absolutely nothing.
So after all that, I liked all three, will probably buy the DVD set, but the last two weren't that great visually.

I didn't like how 2 and 3 turned out, but I am a huge matrix fan.

chicanerous April 8th, 2004, 01:16 PM I liked 3 also.
The ability to notice CG (other than it being blatantly obvious that there is no such thing as the object you are looking at, or it is not possible for the action happening to be the same in the real world) has a lot to do with how immersed you are with the movie and the extent your disbelief has been suspended.
I was immediately reimmersed after the first two minutes when the theater lights grew dim and Revolutions started - everything looked real. But, near the insane Smith/Neo ending fight I began to disconnect during shots where there were hundreds of Smiths -- I've obviously never see something like that on that scale in real life or movies, so my brain didn't know how to equate -- so, consequently, I noticed that each Smith wasn't perfect and was CG. But, when the shot went to Smith and Neo in the hole, I was reimmersed because my brain could handle that - the physics, shots, Smiths at the top of the hole looked real.
Super Fink April 8th, 2004, 01:40 PM The first one was GREAT - the second two were just for money. There was nothing good in the story. The last one to me (my oppinion) was just religous propaganda...
I agree about the sfx - they needed less CG, it was way over kill and mostly looked like "finding Nemo".
These could have been GREAT and ranked up there amongst the Starwars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Futures - but instead they are more like Teen Wolf and Teen Wolf Too.
akm3 April 8th, 2004, 06:49 PM The third one shouldn't be considered 'religious propaganda' anymore then the first -- it is just that the allegory is much less subtle.
Passion of the Christ, now THAT is religious propaganda :)

marcus April 8th, 2004, 11:14 PM Yeah I agree about the CGI. I dislike any movie where they use excessive action and special effects to WOW you. That whole war/invasion scene bored me to death. I like more plot orientated movies rather than just action films.
IMO they didnt expand enough of what they eluded to in Reloaded. Also I didnt really like the ending. I just could not picture the computers or whatever making a deal with the humans and relenting.
When it comes down to it I think my expectations were so high that no matter what they did I wouldnt have liked it.
Now Bring on KILL BILL VOL 2!!! :claphigh:
akm3 April 26th, 2004, 07:46 PM What'dya think of KB Vol 2?
I liked the first one better. Like Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions, it should have been edited down to one long movie.

jtelling April 26th, 2004, 09:09 PM ya know, I dug the big Zion scene where the Mechs (heh) were shooting the squiddies. I dunno why, but truly did like it.
I *did* has some issues with the Neo/Agent Smiths fight at the very end. didn't like that. actually seemed rather, well, boring.
J_C April 27th, 2004, 01:13 AM I thought they were all awsome beginning to end.
woodenkey April 27th, 2004, 04:16 AM I loved them all but wanted a "happier" feel ending. Yea, compromise is nice...but I wanted full out victory. I guess I'm just a sucker for good endings with everyone cheering. I hate the sad/let me think on it endings. lol.
Trydent April 27th, 2004, 11:14 AM I prefer to watch the 1st Matrix and pretend that the 2nd and 3rd ones never happened. I think that the Wachowski brothers had a good thing going with the first and I was pumped to see the whole trilogy. Then I left the theater after seeing reloaded thinking WTF was that piece of crap.
I feel the the Wachowski bros comprimised thier story in order to milk the cash cow. I mean on the Reloaded DVD it tells you " Buy this video game to get more of the story, go buy the Animatrix DVD to get more of the Story."
I could have done without the whole Cave Rave/Orgy scene in Reloaded. It would have been much cooler to put Final Flight of the Osiris in place of that.
As far as the 3rd. It was better than the 2nd. I have to agree I would have rather seen a definate winner of the war. Either the Humans or the Machines. Not treaty.
I have a sneaking suspicion that there will either be another Video Game to tell the story after Revolutions or a 4th movie to completely wrap up the story.
just my 2 cents.

Yeah I wish it was one film, I'm hanging out for when they release it as one film on DVD.
Vol 1 and 2 were such different films so they are kind of hard to compare. I guess I loved the whole Japanese part of vol 1 so I liked it better. The setting in 2 wasnt as seductive and mysterious but it had more character development and more of that classic witty tarantino dialog which I love. I need to see it a few more times to a get a clearer picture in my head. I saw vol 1 about 7 times at the cinema (i get free tiks so I thought what the hell) but I've only seen vol 2 once so I feel like I havent really seen it properly yet because even in the 7th viewing of 1 I was discovering and enjoying new diff parts of the film.
