View Full Version : best thing to eat an hour before workout?
steven Wed, January 10th, 2007, 10:32 AM hey dudes
sometimes i have work at around 10 or 11am so i get to the gym early to workout.. the problem ive been having is that i eat oats or something like eggs on toast but halfway through the workout im ready to throw up (i assume i am eating too much)
so im just wondering whats something small i can eat (not a preworkout bar) that will help me get through my workout without feeling ill and drained?
i was thinking of eating 1 or 2 eggs, 1 banana and green tea. is this good enough? i usually do cardio after my weight training in the morning too..
Bluestreak Wed, January 10th, 2007, 10:39 AM Have a good sized apple or a banana a half hour beforehand. That should do the trick without weighing you down.

I also like either some fruit or yogurt like 30 mins or so before early workouts.

Save the protein for after the workout with your PWO meal/shake. Taking in some moderate-GI carbs before a workout is the best idea, IMO. The protein won't do much good at that point; it's later, after the workout that it's needed. Skim milk doesn't have much in the way of carbs to power you through a workout.

Gordo Wed, January 10th, 2007, 11:15 AM A hour before I have a bowl of rolled oats, almonds, whey, and blueberries and a half banana.
Some people can't workout on a full stomach. I'm the opposite, I can't workout without a big breakfast.

Me too. I like that meal as well.

For me it would depend on the workout? Lifting - I like to have a piece of fruit (but I lift at lunch and have already had 2 meals).
Early morning workouts are usually cardio related and what I eat depends on the type of activity.
Did I help answer the question? I guess not. :(
pup Wed, January 10th, 2007, 02:53 PM I have almost zero appetite in the morning,
which is when i like to work out
so i have an apple or two about 30-45 minutes before
philph Mon, January 15th, 2007, 04:06 PM I prefer to leave more than an hour between eating and working out. But if I've only got one hour, plain zero-fat or low-fat yoghurt works well for me. It is exceptionally easy to digest - and yet (at least in my experience) there is no dramatic glycemic response to mess up my workout, despite the lactose content. I usually find my strength stays good throughout the workout.
A protein shake + oil (or protein and almonds, or mackerel, or tuna + oil, or any of my other protein-carb type meals) doesn't seem to work so well if I eat it that soon before the workout, even though these work fine with a longer gap before the workout. A protein shake on its own results in sudden hunger pangs halfway through the workout. I haven't yet experimented with a fat-only meal before exercise.
As for cardio, I always do this fasted. Although I wake up with a generally large appetite, my cardio puts my hunger on hold. The way I see it, my cardio is in fact NEVER fasted . It is physiologically impossible for it to be fasted, because of the increased availability of free fatty acids. The thought of eating before cardio seems a little perverse and unpleasant to me.
